Was playing just cause 2 and the power suddenly turned off. I can't turn it on now, when it's plugged in all I can hear is a high pitched buzz coming from my power supply. When I turn it off, the sound gets higher in frequency briefly and then turns off. What has happened?

If it is broken, any suggestions for good, reliable and fairly cheap PSUs to replace it with? Preferably one that can handle being on for more than a few hours. This computer is relatively new and built by me

Was there a thunderstorm of power cut off due to which your pc turned off? Open your computer and check your power supply for burning smell. Also, it could also be a faulty modem/video card which must be causing this issue.

definitely wasn't a power cut. No burning smell but the power supply is the thing making the unhealthy noises. If it was the video card I think it would turn on, even if it had no display. Also the motherboard has a built in graphics card so it should still boot. Any PSU suggestions?

if you just built this rig shouldnt you be able to take the psu back for warenty ?

also reliable power supplys can be from any brand im using coolmax 600 watt some people like this brand some dont some go with cooler master or antec just depends on what you are looking for i would look at a psu based on system needs

I mean by that if you need power for you're gpu or other hardware that needs a certain amount of power to function it is always reccomended to get a higher wattage in case to assure juice is going to the harware other then that you might be looking at atleast 100.00 dollars or less out of pocket for a psu that will take care of your current needs

Yep, that can make your PC run again. So you're sure its the power supply which is faulty?

Would help immensely to know your system specs before making any kind of a recommendation.

Also if the power supply did go, it may or may not have taken other things with it. Once you do get a replacement don't be surprised if you have to start replacing other components as well.

P.S. What is the make and model of your current PSU?

It's always amazing how we can dispense recomendations with such little info.

In short system specs helps to provide the BEST recommendations/solutions possible. A detailed description of the incident helps as well.

With that said, did you ever notice any other strange behaviors before the power supply went dead.

And as stormy said, you could have other problems.

My two cents

I was playing the game, the computer turned off instantly and the screen went black. There has been no strange behaviour up to this point. I was playing the game on highest possible settings so it was probably quite power intensive, however, I was playing it the day before, probably for twice as long, with no problems. The processor was overclocked to 3.8 GHz with automatic voltage control. There is no cooling other than the spacious case containing three fans, the processor fan, the video card fan and the PSU fan.

Hmmm...600watts should be enough to power the system. Well, if the power supply is dead there's nothing you can do but replace. After that,if further troubleshooting is required, well...

I would recommend a good quality PS such as Antec or Corsair, to name a couple. There are other manufacture's just as reliable but I can't think of them off the top of my head.

Look at the info I posted about power supplies earlier in this this thread.

Let us know.

So do you think the power supply is definitely the problem? Could anything else have broken with it as someone suggested earlier in the thread? Thanks for all your help guys, It's really fantastic

OCZ makes very good power supplies and if that is what it is, either contact the seller about a replacement or contact OCZ about a RMA of it

OCZ Technology | Support | Customer service FAQ

Even the good manufacturers have a bad one once in a while, just sucks when it happens to be you that gets it. They also tend to have much better protection circuitry in them and usually only take themselves out and not the rest of the components.

ok, new question, how sure can I be that the power supply was the only thing that is broken? I haven't got a spare power supply to see if it works normally without it :(

A visual inspection of the hardware would work. Look for burnt parts, electrical smells, or fried components. Outside of that, you have to power up the system to see if there are any issues.
