Think I may have messed up my registry!

The other day I went on a bit of a mad one using those free registry tools which defrag and clean you registry. Then after that I created I partition on my HDD with G Parted, after I had created a partition I noticed windows wasn't functioning properly, so I tried to do a system restore my restore feature was switched of and it couldn't be switched back on. I don't know whether the registry changes or G Parted altered the system restore feature.

I done a re-install of my OS and used the system back up that Windows Backup made to re-install my files. The thing is though my PC is still buggy, the things which seem to be wrong are as follows:

*IE keeps crashing, but just one window at a time.

*I keep getting an error message telling me that I don't have a graphics driver for my graphics card. Even though I have the driver saved and use the same one all the time.

*My mouse and keyboard don't work to their proper specs even after I have installed the drivers for them, they just seem to work as though they have the default driver that comes with the OS.

*My mouse pointer from time to time will not work on icons on the desktop, although it will work on the task bar and the start menu.

Is it possible that the back up also saved the registry changes that I may have made os is it something else, and is there a way I can fixe this without have to download everything again. PS free software to fix this is essential!

With all of the problems that you are having, the best suggestion is to format your drive and then reinstall the OS from scratch, using a custom install... and I hope you have learned why most members advise avoiding a "registry tweaker" like a Piccadilly wh*re...

Like I said I have done a complete re-install of my OS but the problem still persists, or do you mean I should do one but not use my back upfile?

What graphics card do you have? I need manufacturer and model and i'll find drivers (new)

You need to do an custom install from scratch using the CD.

No, if you go into safe mode with networking, you can go to the manufacturers's website and find a new driver, because the problems you have is often caused by corrupted or broken drivers.

It isn't driver it's was something wrong with my OS, I have just re-installed it and now have lost ALL my files!

Does anyone know of a good peice of free software that will enable me to get my files of my HDD?

If you reinstalled in the same partition as the crashed OS (normally C: ), it will be hard to get the files back, as the installation program formates the partition.

I am really annoyed as I always learn the hard way, it's just as well I have paper copys of what I need and I didn't throw them out.

It did take hours to scan though.

Cheers, i have also invested in a copy of Norton Ghost which does a better job than windows backup in so much that you can back up to more than one location.

I did try that but it was taking hours so I just thought I will start over and learn from my mistakes.

I once formatted a drive by mistake and it was an external one, it took me 4 days of 24/7 to get all the data back but i got it all. Hard mistake to learn from though

It wont take me more than a few hours so I will just knuckle down. If you look at my first post you will see that I also used G parted to create a partition, well that took 4 hours and it would have only took less than an hour using the instalation disk.
