Thinking of a Skylake desktop buld

Now have had the withdrawals for far too long (last build an Ivy Bridge) and am thinking of using the newest stuff.
Now I am only going to use the machine for basic usage and maybe some gaming later.
Have decide on a mis tower say a Coolermaster HAF or Corsair Carbide case an i7 CPU a reasonably priced GPU sound card and say a750W PSU.
My main quandary is the CPU should I get a fast non clock i7 or a clockable one? (I intend to clock the RAM anyway) as the price of the CPU is one component I see I could spend a lot of money on.

Ideas please??

Well, Tommy and I have the 6700K, no issues with it at all so far

But you could just get a 6600K and save at least $100

The 6700 is only about $40 cheaper then the 6700K, your mileage may vary

And are you looking at the new GPU`s , a 1060 or a 1070 ???

Please keep in mine that for many years I have only used Asus motherboards.


With todays new motherboard and the sound quality that they have you probable don't need a sound card unless you have a particular need.

With todays ram used on the newer motherboards, I see no need to over clock ram.
If the price difference between a non-over clock cpu and a over clock cpu isn't much I would choose the one that can be over clocked. You never know what you might want to do later on in life.

How much money are you willing to spend on your case/tower??

You could also wait for Kaby Lake and Zen which both are around the corner, and hopefully if Zen is as amazing as it's been said there might be a price development for Intel.

Boris don't know much about those ones are they a smaller architecture or just low power jobs?? I must have a look because I am also guessing it might be at premium prices too because the Skylake stuff has leveled out at some reasonable prices and having two i7 laptop am really impressed with the performance of them especially the one I am on right now (Asus P2520LA) because my Ivy Bridge with an i5 K is not really that quick even clocked up plus 2400MHz of RAM.

x99 is not that old
Price wise the combo I posted is about the same as a skylake combo
Only difference is no restrictions or hoops to jump through installing win-7
Uses the same ddr4 ram except quad channel instead of dual

John, unfortunately that is going to be the case no matter which Chipset you use. Remember the Z77 was only released something like 3 years ago. It's going to be pretty much the same no matter which one you use. JMO.

Then it will be supported until the next chipset is released. If you want to have the latest chipset or have your chipset supported ( pretty much the same thing) be ready to do a new build every 12-18 months.

Yea it's more now of picking your preferred os and get one with as few hoops to jump through as possible as far as I can tell
If you want skylake... just get used to the fact it is designed primarily for win-10 or 8.

Never seen so many Gurus on a single post. It means that we all love to build our machines.
I've just build a Gigabyte Z170 system with a i5 6600k, DDR4 3000 and M.2 PCIe SSD. I'm disappointed with the results compared to my 5 years old Z86. I was expecting much more.
The main difference between a i7 and a i5 (please correct me if I'm wrong) is Hyper Treating (i5 don't have it).
If you don't use those logical (fake) extra cores, go to a i5. If you choose a k (unlock) version, you need a Z chip set MB.
I agree that the MB sound system is very good and I wouldn't spend money on a sound card. More important are the speakers you're going to use.
After using Asus for many years, my last builds were Gigabyte, and now I'm convinced that Asus is a better choice.
My choice would be a Z170 MB, i5 6600k (mine is running between 800 to 4400MHz with a average heat sink) and DDR4 3000 or a little higher. I can't give my opinion on graphics card as I'm using the IG 530 and I'm satisfied for my needs.
As I had many issues with my M.2 PCIe SSD (with no noticeable speed gain) I won't recommend it.

I read that Kaby Lake and Zen will be compatible only with Win 10 (and Linux).

A few thoughts from me.

1. Their is nothing wrong with a older build.
I have a Asus X58, i7-960, EVGA GTX-960 and a couple of Intel SSD's 12 gigs of ram that still works great. I also have the system in (My System Specs). I choose i7 over i5 not because I need a i7 but rather because I might need a i7 later in time.

2. Their is no such thing as Future Proof. The only way to the biggest and best would be to keep building ever few months or until you run out of time and money.

3. I don't want my motherboard and cpu picking what operating system to use. At the present time if the hardware doesn't like Windows 7; I don't like the hardware. Microsoft should stay out the the hardware business and Asus and Intel should stay out of the operating system business.
One of the reasons people build their own computer is because we get to choose our hardware and programs, including operating systems.

4. If one chooses hardware more to the top end it most likely will take care of your needs for a long time. Even with new operating systems and programs that come out in the future.

5. Always start with solid basics on a build.
A quality high wattage power supply that will take care of your hardware when upgraded or added.
A case/tower that is big and has lots of cooling options. It will make upgrading hardware a lot easier and allow for more options. Size and options does matter.
I would never select a case/tower that didn't have lots of 5 1/4 in. bays. I like to be able to add things later if I desire. No I don't want a bunch of gadgets hanging all over from USB ports. It's a desktop not a laptop.

That is also true to high tech devices. That is why I never buy hardware more to the top end. At top end the prices are at stratospheric levels. And today high end will become very soon mid range. I select my hardware where the cost x performance curve begin to be almost vertical.
And most important: You must have a harmonic system, that is, all parts must be at same cost and performance level.
You wouldn't buy a Ferrari and put a refurbished tire. That apply s to everything.

Ok and many thanks to everyone and yes Jack I do prefer to i7 to be honest simply because th i7 5**** series ones I have in my laptops are such blindingly fast the old clockable i5 in the Ivy Bridge comes nowhere near them.

Yes so I am going to have another look again at getting something per Skylake even though the prices are about equal. But am always open to anymore ideas
