This is a Microsoft project that I stumbled upon and it looks very promising.

Social Web Experience
The Social Web Experience (SWE) project is looking for new ways to connect your social network experience with your web experience. For our first experiment, we built the Social Web Experience Toolbar for Internet Explorer. The toolbar analyzes Web pages and finds related content from your social networks. Your friends' recent status updates and messages, favorite movies, interests, and other profile information are shown when its related to what you're seeing on the Web.

Social Web Experience Project page

EDIT: And lets not forget,

Fishbowl: the Microsoft Facebook Client
Fishbowl brings Facebook to your desktop. Experience your Facebook content in new ways with a desktop client application that lets you personalize how you read your newsfeed, update status, comment, like, browse and upload photos.

Do you know of any Microsoft projects that look appealing?

Completely agree, I lived in a military family that moved every 2 years and Facebook makes it easy to keep in contact with them. But, it appears that the social network project doesn't apply to just Facebook.

yeah but i pretty much just like facebook, myspace was to much effort with keeping all the profile details updated. but i do see the points some people make against them. it seems a lot of people are just "friend collectors" personally i keep mine limited to the people i know personally.

Yes, I also don't collect random friends on Facebook so I can have more people to play Farmville or Mobsters with. That's just stupid.
