I'm having issues connecting to one website that I've verified is up, but not for me.

Windows Network Diagnostics seems to indicates a problem with this website, but not for the internet in general.

The windows network diagnostics report:





Does anyone know how to troubleshoot this issue. I don't think there is anything wrong with my DSL modem.

Reset router and then reboot. If that doesn't work then if it is just one website let us know which browser you are using and the name of the website.

Okay so I can't see any problem with that website. Consider trying the following if you have reset your router (by holding down the reset button) and have rebooted.

Make sure that IE is not running then:

Start> Control Panel> Internet Options

Go to the "Security" tab and reset all zones to defaults.

Igf that doesn't work do you have any others browsers available? (installed or portable)

I don't have any other installed browsers.

I've reset and rebooted the DSL modem, and reset all security zones to default level. They were in default level to begin with.

I've also disabled my Internet security software, ESET Smart Security, and still no fix.

Also let's check your HOSTS file.

"C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\HOSTS"

Navigate to the HOSTS file and choose "edit"

It should open in your text editor. Save as "hosts.txt" and choose save location as your desktop.

OK, I'm back.

I was working with Verizon DSL support. We tried a number of things, but ultimately they didn't solve the problem.

We changed DSL modems. It didn't fix the problem. I'm back on my original DSL modem now.

The original problem couldn't be bypassed by connecting through kproxy. Now, I can connect through kproxy.

If I attempt to ping the site from the command prompt. I get a fail. I think that indicates the problem isn't with the browser.

I also installed a different browser; Google Chrome. That didn't fix the problem either.

If you can't ping the website from the command prompt, how do you troubleshoot that issue?

That HOSTS file is not causing the problem.

Do you have another device that you can use to try and surf to the website of interest? Perhaps a cellphone or tablet. Or maybe ask a friend to bring a laptop over as a test. If multiple devices have problems reaching the website while using your network - then we can stop looking for problems with your desktop.


On your desktop, can you reach the website while in the safe mode with networking?

If you can't ping the website from the command prompt, how do you troubleshoot that issue?

Also, try the NSLOOKUP tool as shown above.


I don't see where you tested while using another DNS provider.

Did you delete a post? You can connect through kproxy but not otherwise. Seems to me like it's a DNS issue.

No, I didn't delete any posts.

I don't think it's browser, internet security software, or DSL modem, because I can connect through kproxy.

I'm going to post my ping results.

Note: Proxy over-rides your settings and uses it's own DNS lookup server. That's probably why it works.

Your firewall settings/your av settings and certificates.

By the way its not the same site you had the same problem with 2 years ago is it??.

I've disable my firewall to eliminate it from the equation.

I wasn't able to connect with kproxy until I reset the DSL modem. So, that seems to have resolved part of the issue. I can now connect to uchicago.edu, but not Penelope.uchicago.edu.

I was having general connection issues two years ago and have since performed several clean installs.

I've run quicksetdns, but that hasn't resolved the issue. I suspect there's a setting in my lan/network configuration that's blocking some sites.

Do you have any suggestions?

When I change my DNS setting using QuickSetDNS, I can see a problem when I use the Automatic DNS versus Google Public DNS or OpenDNS.

For you: uchicago.edu is translated into 198.101.129.25 no matter which DNS i used.

That is correct.
