Thought provoking...

The Stranger

A few years after I was born, my Dad met a stranger who was new to our small town. From the beginning, Dad was fascinated with this enchanting newcomer and soon invited him to live with our family. The stranger was quickly accepted and was around from then on.

As I grew up, I never questioned his place in my family. In my young mind, he had a special niche. My parents were complementary instructors: Mom taught me good from evil, and Dad taught me to obey.

But the stranger... he was our storyteller. He would keep us
spellbound for hours on end with adventures, mysteries and comedies.

If I wanted to know anything about politics, history or science, he always knew the answers
about the past, understood the present and even seemed able to predict the future! He took my family to the first major league ball game. He made me laugh, and he made me cry. The stranger never stopped talking, but Dad didn't seem to mind.

Sometimes, Mom would get up quietly while the rest of us were shushing each other to listen to what he had to say, and she would go to the kitchen for peace and quiet. (I wonder now, if she ever prayed for the stranger to leave.)

Dad ruled our household with certain moral convictions, but the stranger never felt obligated to
honor them. Profanity, for example, was not allowed in our home - not from us, our friends or
any visitors. Our long time visitor, however, got away with four-letter words that burned my ears and made my dad squirm and my mother blush.

My Dad didn't permit the liberal use of alcohol but the stranger encouraged us to try it on a regular basis. He made cigarettes look cool, cigars manly, and pipes distinguished. He talked freely (much
too freely!) about sex. His comments were sometimes blatant, sometimes suggestive, and generally embarrassing..

I now know that my early concepts about relationships were influenced strongly by the stranger. Time after time, he opposed the values of my parents, yet he was seldom rebuked... And NEVER asked to leave.

More than fifty years have passed since the stranger moved in with our family. He has blended right in and is not nearly as fascinating as he was at first. Still, if you could walk into my parents' den today, you would still find him sitting over in his corner, waiting for someone to listen to him talk and watch him draw his pictures.

His name?....

We just call him 'TV.'
(Note: This should be required reading for every household!)
He has a wife now....we call her 'Computer.'
Their first child is "Cell Phone".
Second child "I Pod "

Today I am joining a program of Ph.D. coursework in the university . Out of total six weeks, it will continue one week only. The classes will be started from 10 AM and continue upto 5 PM. So I will not be able to be online in the daytime this week :(

Arc hi.. I'm so very proud you for doing this.
You may not have Forum time..but this will really add to your job applications , if you ever need to have this degree , plus once you have the education, no one can ever take it away from you.. now days knowledge is power.

As you all know.. October is Breast Cancer awareness month..

" Mammogram Court " article .

While conducting some business at the Court House, I overheard a lady, who had been arrested for assaulting a Mammogram Technician, say, "Your Honor, I’m guilty but . . . there were extenuating circumstances."

The female judge said, sarcastically, "I'd certainly like to hear those extenuating circumstances. I did, too, so, I listened as the lady told her story.

"Your Honor, I had a mammogram appointment, which I actually kept. I was met by this perky little clipboard carrier smiling from ear to ear and she tilted her head to one side and crooned, "Hi! I'm Belinda! All I need you to do is step into this room right here, strip to the waist, then slip on this gown. Everything clear?"

I'm thinking, "Belinda, try decaf. This ain't rocket science." Belinda then skipped away to prepare the chamber of horrors.

With the right side finished, Belinda flipped me (literally) to the left and said, "Hmmmmm. Can you stand on your tippy toes and lean in a tad so we can get everything?" Fine, I answered.

I was freezing, bruised, and out of air, so why not use the remaining circulation in my legs and neck to finish me off? My body was in a holding pattern that defied gravity (with my other breast wedged between those two 4 inch pieces of square glass) when I heard and felt a zap!

Complete darkness, the power was off!

Belinda said, "Uh-oh, maintenance is working, bet they hit a snag" Then she headed for the door.

"Excuse me! You're not leaving me in this vise alone are you?" I shouted.

Belinda kept going and said, "Oh, you fussy puppy. . . the door's wide open so you'll have the emergency hall lights. I'll be right back."

Before I could shout NOOOO! She disappeared. And that's exactly how Bubba and Earl, "maintenance men Extraordinaire" found me . . half-naked with part of me dangling from the Jaws of Life and the other part smashed between glass.

After exchanging a polite Hi, how's it going type greeting, Bubba (or possibly Earl) asked, to my utter disbelief, if I knew the power was off.

Trying to disguise my hysteria, I replied with as much calmness as possible, "Uh, yes, I did but thanks anyway."

"Ok, you take care now," Bubba replied and waved good-bye as though I'd been standing in the line at the grocery store.

Two hours later, Belinda breezes in wearing a sheepish grin. Making no attempt to suppress her amusement, she said, "Oh I am sooo sorry! The power came back on and I totally forgot about you! And silly me, I went to lunch. Are we upset?"

And that, Your Honor, is exactly how her head ended up between the clamps . . "

The judge could hardly contain her laughter as she said "Case Dismissed!".

Came across a large ladybug in dire straits, lying on its back with twitching legs and one wing sticking out of its wing-case. After I carefully flipped it back onto its stomach, it proceeded to wander around the sill in a rather drunken manner, stopping every now and then to retract its trapped wing - without success. My hopes concerning its survival were rather low.
Fifteen minutes later, when I returned to my room, I found it sitting happily on the wall, with that wing finally fully retracted. Right on cue, it spread open its wing-cases and zoomed out of the window to the neighbour's tree. A determined little creature! :D

First wall lizards, then ladybugs...I wonder what will be next ;-)) I don't like to see the little critters suffer or experience discomfort, and helping them is usually such a straightforward matter. Our neighbour, by the way, is sure he saw a fox recently. Lots of animals are losing their habitat thanks to the building lobby, and they're wandering into human settlements. I've noticed that if a new house sprouts up, many birds will lose their lives flying against the glass - it can take a good year or two until they have adjusted their geography.

 I am sorry to say that the rubbish bins at uni are not changed/cleaned out regularly. They do not even have a bin liner. The result: CLOUDS of drosophila flies sitting in the bins and feasting on the garbage. Nudge a bin with your foot, and a whole swarm of flies rises in protest. Today, I was forced to eat my lunch in another room after five or six flies kept circling my sandwich...
