Did you explore whether you could run Win7 in e.g. Virtual Box. I did that with the Beta and the prerelease and that worked very well. My tutorial in this zip folder will tell you how (just note that this tutorial is over 1 year old and there might be slight differences).

Thank you for the tutorial, but my hard drive issue is that it's only 18 gigabytes in size. I would have about 80% of the hard drive covered by 7 alone. At the moment, I only have 3 gigabytes left with XP installed.

Hmm, that's tough. Can't you upgrade the disk or add a second one? And what about running Win7 only. You could cut the size down to as little as 4-5GBs with vLite.

Money is very short for me... I did try seeing about the full 7 installation on my hard drive, and as said, it would take up around 80% of the drive. But I did do the vLite idea, and it has worked wonderfully. I can say now that I'm happily setting up Windows 7 now.

Is it allowed to rep in the Chillout forums? xD

Still have XP on wife's laptop. It has been sentenced to death but the execution date has not been set. Too busy doing the flower beds, spring cleaning and weekend festivals.

As I wait for Explorer to restart, I type this.

I miss Win7.. it's hard for me to want to keep XP after being forced to downgrade back to XP due to hard drive issues. I'm so used to the features in 7, along with the stability I've found in it. Plus, how am I to develop programs for Windows 7 when I am not running Windows 7?

Ok... how'd I do that?

I used VLite to remove Media Center, Speech Recognition, Natural Language Search and about 50 languages.... Saving? 2.2gb from the installer image, about 10gb installed.

I run with no system restore, no pagefile, no hibernation and do not use automatic updates... it's going to stay that size.

So I don't have any software installed, do I?

Well... As you can see, it's pretty much a full system...

It's all in the setup...

Now if I could only sort out the network compatibility issues, I could make this back into my primary OS...

XP is STILL a solid OS. It isn't going to die out nearly as fast as "Windows 7 only" fans seem to think. I'm currently running 7 Ultimate x64, but if for some reason I couldn't, I would run XP-Pro SP3 WAY before I ran Vista. I have a funny feeling that Microsoft will continue to support XP longer than they have announced too.

XP had a great run, and apparently it's not exactly dead yet. I remember when XP-Pro SP2 first came out. It blew me away. It was Microsoft's finest hour to date.

I did not complain. I just wanted to make you aware that the OP had already done the vLite reduction. I had the impression that you had missed that part. I was just trying to give a friendly hint.

What size if your HDD (2.5 or 3.5).

Well I still have my XP drive since I can't get Elaboratebytes Clonedvd2 and Gamejackel pro to work on Seven 64 bit. And I paid for them before they put a 2 year limit on the licence. So I keep my XP to burn DVD's and that's about it. Until I get my laptop back from my Nephew then bye bye XP on this machine. Fabe

Hi all
I still have to keep XP around (or at least W2K3 Server) as a VM for these applications :

1) SAP DB applications on Oracle still need a 32 BIT OS ( I can run the front end SAPGUI from W7 X-64 no problem but the DB server still only runs on 32 bit OS'es PRIOR to W7 - I never used VISTA 32 bit so the W2K3 server is just fine.

2) I Rip my music to FLAC - but then still use Minidisc Players for portable music - and RECORDING devices. To get Music on to the MD device I create a "Virtual CD" from my FLAC music and "Burn" to MD with the simple burning application which ONLY runs on XP / W2K3 systems or earlier -- this software won't even run on VISTA. I'm not a big fan of hideously compressed MP3 formatted music -- ATRAC3 at 256 or 320 beats MP3 HANDS DOWN anytime even though it's a proprietary format.

3) I have some old "Blue Print" architectural printing devices -- the original Manufacturer has long since vanished so these devices will only rtun on earlier OS'es.

4) I still prefer WORD 2003 although the rest of the office suite I use 2007 and now 2010. It's still good to be able to fire up a Virtual machine running Office 2003 If I get into a tangle with the wretched ribbon in Office 2007 / 2010. Some of my work stuff also needs Office 2003 compatability so using 2003 from time to time I won't get suckered into using the new features which will cause problems when saving work documents.

I have a few other legacy programs such as Horse Racing and Financial trading stuff which is a bit to complicated to re-work for W7 -- these need the older .NET stuff and I'm not a programmer so they can stay on XP / W2K3.

I agree with everybody on these forums that W7 is a much nicer / better OS but there are still lots of perfectly valid reasons for keeping XP / W2K3 as a VM around for a good while yet. Modern hardware makes running Virtual Machines a real easy choice too -- the speed can be almost as fast as 100% Native OS operation too.

The only real application I was using which required XP or Vista 32 bit was Cool Edit Pro 2000 (which was used to record and convert all my reel to reel tapes, and records (45's and 33 1/3's to mp3, and wave format)).

i still use Cool Edit Pro 2.1 on 7 x64. so far haven't noticed any problems.

Myself use Adobe Audition 1.5 on W7 x86. It tends to lock though (which results in a Win7 hard lock - not good)

On topic : For me, XP died when I switched to Vista in May 2008.
