But 778 is the same as 787 is the same as 877
788 is the same as 878 is the same as 887

Statistically not. When counting the probability of a certain combination, then you need to count every disk having 2 possibilities, giving the formula 2*2*2 = 8 = 2³. Statistically 778 is not the same as 787 or 877 when analyzing results.

True in a way but please read the puzzle again. Forget numbers and look at the puzzle as it is written. There are four ways the discs can land
1) three sevens
2) three eights
3) two sevens and one eight
4) two eights and one seven

Answer four

Don't worry Kari, I'm from Helston about 15 miles west of Boobah and I've got no idea what he talks about most of the time. A Glaswegian mixed with a bit of Cornish is a volatile subtance in my view!

If asked like this, then [Disk 1:7, Disk 2:7, Disk 3:8] is not the same combination than [Disk 1:7, Disk 2:8, Disk 3:7]. The answer is 8 combinations.

But to get to your solution you need to add a new dimension which was not in the original puzzle!

Kari is correct - in statistical theory combinations refers to permutations. Two different numbers on each of 3 disks is expressed as 2!3 (two factorial 3) which is 2 x 2 = 4 x 2 = 8.

The total number of combinations is 8.

But the total number of outcomes are sample space of the experiment, which is 2 to the power 3 as Kari answered.

As the combinations of possible numbers is asked, Kari's answer is right. If the question is that how many sets of outcomes are possible (under which condition 778=787=877; all are two sevens and one eight), John's answer would be right.
