Just to clarify: a primary partition is a simple volume as a single entity. A logical drive is an area of drive space that is part of an extended primary partition.
The reason logical partitions are so useful is that you are only allowed four primary partitions on a hard drive. A logical partition as part of an extended primary partition is a way of getting round this restriction.
