I thought I'd found a topic in this forum about crashing when the laptop goes to sleep, but I can't find it now...

Laptop is a couple years old. HAS ALWAYS WORKED FINE....... DID NOT CRASH ON SLEEP. Running Windows 7 home premium with SP1.

No new software. No new hardware. No new NOTHING in months.... EXCEPT the other day MS wanted to install a dozen or so updates. I installed the important ones. This is the ONLY thing I know of that's new on this box.

Now, when it goes to sleep, it must crash because I've got to reboot from startup.

I have no errors in the windows logs. I have no errors in the device manager. I have no dumps (unless they're somewhere other than windows/minidump). I have no disk errors.

Is it reasonable to think one of those updates did something undesirable? If so, does the MS update create a restore point before it updates? So far, I haven't found any restore points.

Can someone who can find it, point me at the topic that'll walk me through getting whatever information is needed to find out why this thing is crashing?

Hi,
Have you attempted system restore to before the updates or issue occurred ?
Then alter your windows update settings,
Make sure you Uncheck Give me recommended updates the same as Important ones,
Also change to Let me choose when to download and Install updates so you can know what is attempting to download and install,
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/2797-windows-update-settings-change.html
Then see what just loading the Important updates does,
Forget about the Optional updates for now,
Cheers.
Also use the link to Fill in your system spec's sheet above my signature,
Post which Security suite you have installed as well.

It appears I have no system restore points on this laptop.

I was apparently mistaken in my thinking that MS would do a restore point BEFORE installing updates...

As far as the updates... I NEVER let it install automatically. I just notifies me. And I VERY rarely install the optional stuff. This was ONLY the dozen or so "important" updates.

Unfortunately, I'm sitting in a campground at Monument Valley, and the Internet connection is "poor" at best. I think I have the system specs updated...

I don't think it's a system issue. I'm considering going into programs and undoing updates 1 x 1 from the last time I did updates...

Hi,
Post a screen shot of what important updates are there,
I would start with possibly the largest windows 7 update first,
But a dozen is showing your a bit out of date the last string of updates were 6,
Check them by date and load them from the past to present,
Cheers.

You didn't say which security suite you have installed ?

OK, today, I have a data signal, so I can get back to this....

As for the updates - it "said" there were 13 important updates. When I checked in Programs, there were dozens of "updates" applied on 3/11, which is when I let MS do the updates.

Prior to seeing your reply, I went in and selected an area of updates and removed them. There were 7 or 8 that (as I recall) were "windows"... There were dozens for Office, but I ignored those....

Anyhow, AT THE MOMENT, the laptop is no longer crashing when it sleeps... I have no idea whether or not removing the half dozen updates did it, dumb luck, some other setting I haven't thought about, or some kind of cosmic convergence... BUT, for the moment, it's not crashing.

Security on here is Microsoft Security Essentials.

If it starts crashing again, I'll get a screen shot BEFORE I remove any updates......

OH, and just for fun, MS wants to do more updates! I DON'T think it'll let it do anything to the box until I get back home in 3 or 4 weeks. I also know now that I need to create a restore point before I let MS mess with anything!

Hi,
Refer to post #2 and alter your windows update settings,
This will sort the updates as Important and Optional,
Post screen shots of both although the Optional updates can usually be skipped but the Important ones need to be installed,
MSE issues updates via Optional updates you need to Install those updates or find another security suite that updates in another way,
Cheers.
