Solved Toshiba satellite bios detects cd/dvd rom but windows 7 ultimate wont,

Help guys, first of all I am new here, so howdy?

info:
Laptop Toshiba Satellite 550 series
O/S Win 7 Ultimate 32 bit
Intel core Due 2000
ram 4GB

Problem.
I reinstalled my Windows fresh and was operating perfectly, after attempting to dual boot the machine with Ubuntu 12:04 which failed miserablly the Windows also has become so that it takes exactly 6 minutes 16 seconds to boot up. the ubuntu that i tried to install Fails completely.

So as it is a new fresh Windows also I thought no bother, I just reinstall Windows again, so went into the bios and told it to boot up from CD and I though Bobs yer uncle in a few minuts. NO. the machine booted up again via HDD at the same pace of 6.16 minutes.....
Thought ok, just stick the win 7 cd in and click the Setup.exe file.... that should sort it, except under my Computer Shows up no CD/DVD Rom device.

I looked into the device Manager next and in reality there are no cd/DVD Rom device listed and no Option to introduce one, under add new Hardware everything under the sun Comes up listed but CD Rom devices.

So I thought you know what go into command promt and Format c: manually and then put the cd in, that should work because the bios has detected the cd Rom.... except the machine refuses to Format c; drive at allll cost.

ran MSconfig next to try and sort it there but I was just as unsuccessful there as the rest.

now what I am doing is ""pulling My Hair out"" please someone tell whats going on with this machin!!!!

The CD ROM problem may be a driver problem. Look at the Toshiba site whether they have a driver.

Your slow boot is probably caused by the remaining Grub. But that can be fixed. Post a picture of your Disk Management and we'll see what can be done.

Formatting the disk from within the OS does not work because the system protects itself.

Next time tou want to install Ubuntu, put it into a virtual partition. That is a lot easier. Here is a tutorial on how to do that. It is for Zorin which is an Ubuntu derivative and it works the same for Ubuntu. Only the VMware Tools installation needs different commands. Try those:

cd Desktop/vmware-tools-distrib

sudo ./vmware-install.pl -d

You were lucky. The Grub does not seem to be in your system. But now I am a bit puzzled about your slow boot times. I do not see a partition where you could have possibly installed Ubuntu. What happened to that partition?

gut zu wissen....
The onlything I did was to go into the add and remove programs through the C/P and deleted ubuntu...I did think at the time that this will only superficially remove it but didnt think that it would create damage.

What happens if I copy the "Inhalt" of the Windows 7 CD and paste it into an 8 gig USB drive and then exe it? will it over write the Windows with a fresh copy from there?

You can create a bootable USB stick and install with that. See here:

But before you install, I would clean the disk and create a primary active partition to which you can install. One advantage is that you do not get the dreaded 100MB system partition - the bootmgr will be in C.

You can do that in several ways.

The commands to use are:

Diskpart
List disk
Select disk n (where n is the number that was given for your disk in List disk)
Clean
Create partition primary
Format fs=ntfs quick
Active
Exit



2. Using the bootable CD of Partition Wizard. Download the .iso from the last box on this website and burn that to CD. Then boot with the CD.

To activate a partition in PW, you highlight the partition, click on the Partition tab (top left) and go to Modify. There you'll see.

I did it all. 1st I tried to d/load the dvd driver from toshiba but everytime came as a corrupted file, then I tried to D/load a new bios, that was the same, so finally i formatted my usb stick through CMD via the link you provided and succeeded in reinstalling win 7.
Now the computer starts up like lightning and all is working........except...... the DVD/CD is not detected and not visible under my computer!!!!!
i dont know really, im now going to retry the driver now that i have a fresh healthy copy installed, any ideas welcome.

wow whatdya know, a few days ago the pc went thru 178 updates and 5 automatic restarts. I didnt think much of it, infact i was annoyed cos the pc was unusable for a good hour.... yesterday as i was looking for something I clicked on my computer and what dya know, the DVD icon was ther and it functions einwandfrei as they say in your language WHS.
