Solved Toshiba Satellite C660 WiFi and LAN Driver Problem

Hi Golden,

Yep that's what I thought. Having taken apart three different laptops from four different manufacturers (Toshiba, DELL, HP and SONY) to replace LCD display screens and DC-in Power Jacks, I know the horrors that lurk inside with the myriad of tiny screws and plastic catches - not to mention the incrediblt small, fiddly and easily-damaged wires that connect to things like the WiFi card!!

Meanwhile, going to try Derek's alternative Realtek driver csutil-20101004160138.zip and see if that makes a difference. Also going to try installing Windows 7 64-bit from my genuine retail box (using my colleague's CoA licence key which is just barely readable) and see if anything happens on that side.

Will repor back shortly,

further update:

Installed Windows 7 HP 64-bit, then tried installing drivers.

installed the following drivers in this order (some were for 32-bit OS - *shrugs*):

(which produced an error as before - "Can not find support device" )

I may (can't remember) have tried Derek's alternative chipset driver: csutil-20101004160138.zip

I now have internet access via wired Ethernet - Whoo!

Now going through the painful process of updating Windows (this may take some time). In the meantime, a pic of HWiNFO32:

UPDATE:

Now have both Ethernet and WiFi access

Ran Windows Update which offered (amongst others):

Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller
Realtek RTL8188CE Wireless LAN 802.11n PCI-E NIC
TOSHIBA x64 ACPI Compliant Value Added Logical General Purpose Device

So I downloaded and installed these first & re-booted.

I still have wired Ethernet and WiFi connections.

Now ready to install SP1 (that will take a while!)

Well done Zaph, sounds like you've made progress.

Looking at the system info file you uploaded from the 32bit install, I see it only has 1GB of RAM in that laptop.



If you are going to keep the 64bit OS on there, you are going to want more RAM.

Nice work getting that going.

Yep Derek, I'll tell my colleague (actually my Head of department) that I'd recommend bumping that up to at least 2Gb (I think 4 is the max with that laptop).

I'll look on the Crucial.com website to see the costs of DDR3 RAM. Even the 32-bit version of the OS would be much happier with more than 1Gb RAM - possibly that was one of the reasons that the pc was running "slow" - the reason for re-installing the OS in the first place.

According to the specifications, 4Gb is the max (there are two slots in the machine). I'd go for at least 1Gb/1Gb (in case one stick fails) or better, 2Gb/2Gb.

John, what good is a SSD going to do for the ethernet drivers/connectivity?

@Zaphod : you haven't had any luck installing the chipset drivers again?

Now what I have done quite a few times in the past is just load the drivers from the Toshiba site to a stick on another machine then transfer the drivers from the stick to the machine.

I usually only need to download the WAN or WLAN drivers and the rest is history as you can then access the site for the rest of them or even Slim Drivers which I find helpful then delete it from the machine.

Now I don't want to or am trying to be pedantic or obstructive but what for me is now simplistic I am just passing on here.

Zaph in the pic is what I see for the site rivers what you see may be different, and for the record I have found Toshiba less than helpful and very slow at giving out support advice.

Well am glad it is done now and Zaph this is a good site if you want to strip down particularly the older Toshibas Disassemble, repair, upgrade Toshiba laptop yourself.

Thanks for that info ICIT2LOL. Whenever I strip down a laptop, I do a step-by-step illustrated tear-down (in case I have to do it again) - as it is always useful to have a guide as to where the different-sized screws and the fiddly plastic clips go and where the cable-runs are!

I'll bookmark that site and have a dekko soon (don't forsee having to strip down my wife's C660 - but who knows *shrugs*)
