Hello, im dealing with a friends Toshiba Satellite laptop. The computers mousepad will not work. The keyboard will npt respond to 80% of the keys including the Enter or Arrow pad. At first I thought it might've been a corrupted windows installation but then accessing the Bios menu (F2 key worked) I was unable to input any other keyboard commands. I popped an Ubuntu CD and am having similar issues. I've came to the conclusion that components would have to be replaced.

any input would be appreciated!

Should I advise my friend that a replacement keyboard would have to be ordered? What steps should I approach next? Thank you in advance!

I think I would first try to go to the Toshiba website, look up the particular laptop and download updated drivers. It could be a driver issue and i would try that before spending money on new parts.

I successfully pulled the keyboard out. I used compress air to clean the dust off the motherboard and reseated both the keyboard and mousepad connection. Still same issue ...

By looking at your two posts and the action you have already taken, it looks like the problem is not of a software nature but hardware failure.

You have not mentioned how old is the laptop and how it was handled during it's lifetime. You have not mentioned what OS is there and were you able to boot into the OS.

One way of checking the keyboard and touch pad is that try to connect a USB keyboard and see whether you can operate all the keys. Similarly you can try connecting a generic USB mouse and see it functions.

If the system works with these external keyboard and mouse, then you can try to get a replacement keyboard either from local computer repair shop or directly from Toshiba. For mousepad it is not worth replacing it. Your friend can manage with a USB or wireless mouse which willl be cheaper.

Till the keyboard is replaced, he can manage the laptop with these devices.
