Toshiba has unveiled the world's first 2.5in 512GB solid state drive (SSD), designed to provide a high level of performance and endurance for use in notebook computers, and gaming and home entertainment systems.
The company also unveiled a broad family of SSDs based on its 43nm Nand chips, offering capacities of 64GB, 128GB and 256GB in 1.8in or 2.5in enclosures or as SSD Flash Modules.

What is astounding though is that if we can get 16GB in a phone, surely this could be increased to put in pc architecture. Just look at the difference in size between a mobi itself (not even the storage) and a HDD??

They reckon moores law will limit processor power but already they have a new replacement technology for the existing processor technology

even though i think we wont be around we get here...
and even holographic storage now thats the future...
this made me pick up a NG magazine (National Geographic magazines that were in my basement)
it was 1978 i believe and they were saying about how they can store the library of congress on a single sugar cube (that a lot of storage on a single sugar cube)
they predicted the technology would get mainstream by 2010 but alas i dont see any clue of that going to happen....

Well, there is also the factor that copying to and from those machines is not exactly the same speed as copying to, say,a 7200 rpm HD....

Technology is there but it is prohibitively expensive right now....

as for the cake
if they created it from sugar cubes they would only need two or three on every "drive"(if they called it that HDD (Holographic Disk Drive...lol)...
there would be increased production of sugar

I'm going to have to give this serious consideration for my new system. This price isn't that bad and it's plenty big for an OS. I've read a couple places that the first of the year the prices are going way down. Like everyone is saying you can use HDDs for storage.

dont buy it if you are going to do any data intensive programs (it wont you give you the same ramdom disk write speed as a 10k drive..)

Winning a Science fair is showing *proven* technology. I am not saying that NG is not a reputable magazine - I am saying that this kid had the theory worked out and demonstrated the possibility that it would actually work.

Magnetic media that can hold a lot more data then even the current big boys can hold....

Do read some reviews on performance and the like - 60 GB is good enough for a single OS, but at that price you can ge better performance out of a VelociRaptor at 5 times the size - good enough for 3 (or more) OSs....

i am not saying that it wasnt proven or not (it was proven in the pub they showed the actual process along with the finished product) i was saying that a one of the biggest publications say right out that they were expecting to have this technology everywhere by that time...

as for the kid good for him i give him props for being able to comprehend that...

Review: Maxell 32GB Solid State Storage Device

Maxell dual-head device gives eSATA data transfer rates with USB 2.0 compatibility

Maxell's dual storage device, announced in October and available now, combines the better data transfer rates available from e-Serial ATA (eSATA) technology with USB 2.0 connectivity.
However, the device with the firmware release we had will only work on eSATA/USB combo ports, and not on eSATA-only ports. Maxell said that early models will need a firmware upgrade to connect to eSATA-only ports, which will mean returning the device to Maxell.

The mirror-finish 16g device packs 32GB into its 770mm x 260mm x 5mm body, and has an exposed mini-USB 2.0 connection on one end, and an eSATA connection at the other shielded by a cap.

Our test system was a Toshiba A600-122 Portégé, with a 1.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 2Gb of memory. Checking the eSATA data transfer rates using SiSoftware's System ANalyser, Diagnostic and Reporting Assistant 2009 gave a read speed of 64MB/s. Running a real-world data transfer write test gave 22.8MB/s using large file sizes. With a test mix of smaller files we recorded a data transfer speed just over 10MB/s.
