I have a Samsung Galaxy Ace and bought a USB to phone charging / data cable expecting to download photos from the phone to the computers.
Now I joined up with Samsung thinking they would download some software to do this but there was no such thing and only apps and the phone although plugged in is not recognised in Computer.
So there is something that is going on that I am not aware of can someone enlighten me on what one has to do??

Hi there John .. Read the Link below should be of some help .. I know there is other Software you can use .. Just can not think of the name of it at the moment .. I am sure some other Member will be along though ..
Hum well just spent the best part of an hour and a half downloading the Kies software from Samsung it promptly deleted my most recent pics and doesn't have a function to upload pics from the phone.
I can see the phone in Device Manager but not in Computer?? Plus I cannot se how I can copy /paste from the phone to the computer it is all very frustrating very -

if your pc (Saw you have a laptop. almost all recent laptops are) is Bluetooth enabled, just pair the PC with your phone and use share option from you phone to transfer anything. You will find the transferred files in Bluetooth exchange folder in My documents.
Also before transfer starts, your PC will request permission to connect for one time, 5 mins or longer duration.
With both a Galaxy S4 and S5 my machine just sees it as two Disks - one for the Phone's internal storage and the other for the extra micro SDHC storage card. Windows / File explorer works fine in cutting / pasting.
The only thing I can think of is that your USB on the computer doesn't have "enough juice" -- so either power the phone / device (attach the charger) or use a powered USB hub (or both). I have one or two external USB HDD's that need power on the USB before they work properly in Data transfer.
If transferring to / from a laptop also ensure the mains power is connected to the laptop. USB data transfer from some devices needs all the power it can get.
You shouldn't need the KIES software.
Note also Data transfer to / from the Micro SDHC card isn't the fastest -- for a 4.7GB movie go away and have a glass (or two) of beer / scotch or a cup of coffee etc.
The other way you could do it too - but it's probably as SLOW AS MOLASSES is to use blue tooth on device and computer if using a laptop. For a 4.7 GB movie don't even THINK of blue tooth transfer. !!!!
Cheers

Ok John Max and Jimbo I will try those later as the laptop is not here right now. I might remove the Kies software anyway as it took ages to download and install and doesn't seem to "do" anything.
The laptop a Toshiba L550 only has three USB ports and I am guessing that it should have enough power for those.
What is so odd is that the phone is still recognised in Device Manager yet not in computer - I should have mentioned this laptop is an upgrade to 8 running Stardock for 7 effect - would that make any difference?
Something else odd too I now have lost a lot of pics I took in the garden recently and when it was hooked up was "downloading pics of Asus motherboards and stuff I have no idea was about and yet I cannot find these downloaded pics anywhere.
I have asked Samsung support after I did download the manual which itself said nothing about uploading pics / data to to the laptop / computer.
All in all seems very odd that it is so convoluted to do this.
