I have two laptops, one is Win 7 and the other is Win 8.

I only have an ordinary ethernet cable, not a crossover one, but I wanna try my luck anyway.

After hooking up both laptops, several icons appear under "My Computer>Network Location" in Win 8.

Each icon is labelled with the username of each user on the Win 7 laptop. Each one is a "Media Server"

When I double click on one of them, it says "username (computer name) is denying access to your PC. Contact the owner of the media server to allow your PC to access it."

So I have to tweak certain settings on my Win 7 laptop, but I don't know what to do.

Homegroup has no such limitations on file size period.

ICS on the other hand, has many drawbacks and limitations. A router would solve all problems here. :geek:

But all I have is an ethernet cable. How do I make it work?

Well there are some problems with ICS and Windows 8 in particular, apparently some of the Windows services require adjustments to get ICS working with Windows 8. The settings in the link may help.
Internet Connection sharing problem with Windows 8

You see, for ICS to work you first need an internet connection, and you also need 2 Ethernet ports on the first machine, one for the connection and the other is for sharing that connection with the other machine. Because this is a laptop I'm kind of doubting that it has two Ethernet ports. It also doesn't sound like you have an internet connection.

Simply plugging the Ethernet ports together isn't going to cut it for ICS although you should be able to move files between the two machines using just the one cable, the links below shows the steps for this.

Before buying a crossover cable, check your network adapter. Some newer network adapters automatically "cross over" when they detect that they are connected directly to another network adapter using a regular Ethernet cable."

A possible solution is to use a USB flash drive and transfer the files onto the USB flash drive then plug in the USB flash drive into the other machine and transfer the files from it. :)

Unfortunately, I don't even know the default steps I must take to make it work, hence I don't even know if there's an ICS problem.

What are the steps I must take after plugging the two computers together? What should I expect to see if it works fine?

Sorry but I'm pretty noob when it comes to such things.
