Transferring Windows to a new Hard Drive

Awesome. I've been asking where to find your tutorial for weeks after failing to bookmark it.

I want to try one: How much modding would be needed to make a bootable Recov partition triggered by F key instead of Windows Boot Menu?

to be honest... i have no idea how to go about it, or even if its possible. I assume that it is, but it isn't something i have tried or even have the expertise to attempt! much better to leave it to someone like you who probably knows alot more about it than I do.

If you get somewhere with it please let me know though, i would be very interested!

update: i found my windows 7 disk this morning, masquerading in Civ IV's case (dont ask) so i didnt need to go through the whole conveluted setup i had planned out i just reimaged from the Retail Disk

and i installed my first hard drive! had a bit of an iffy moment where i accidentally plugged the old drive into SATA port 4 instead of 2, and it didnt recognise it (why give a motherboard 4 SATA slots if only 3 are usable?) and thought i was going to lose all my data, but other than that, all plain sailing

Greg iv been thinking about your "Recov Partition on Function Key" idea, it seems to me, the only way to do it, would be with some kind of BIOS mod?

Likely. But what about using the F key for Recovery which is often abandoned when HD is wiped for install/reinstall? It must point to a partition which it marks active. Guess it could only be on the BIOS chip, tho.

Glad you found your DVD and WIn7 imaging utility reimaged a new HDD.

i wonder... if you get rid of the OEM protection on the Partition, but leave the actual partition in tact, then stick the homebrew rec partition on there, if that would do the job... then again it may be looking for a OEM specific code and i can't see how you would make it point to the boot.wim file needed

unfortunately i cant test it on my machine as i obliterated the OEM Vista partition which was originally on the old HDD
