does every game except the ones that came out within the past few months have an issue with Win7? Judging from this forum it sure seems like it. What gives? Figured this new awesome Win7 would run a rock. Apparently not a great as it seems?

lol.
I would say 99% of games works absolutely fine on Win 7 (I myself have a variety of games installed on 7, am yet to have one issue with ANY of them), but ofcourse there will always be people with problems no matter what the OS platform is. Win2k, XP, Vista, 7 doesnt matter, there will always be people who have problems (and the ppl who do have problems are the vast minority) and usually its not directly the fault of the OS, usually incompatibilities with drivers, conflicting software yadda yadda yadda...

Win7 IMO is as great as it seems.

Yupp, the problems that you are seeing arent because they have windows 7, its because windows 7 is new. And you need to make the game according to these new standards. Every new OS, even XP had problems like this when it was launched. So dont go around blaming something you dont know about =/

thanks for the info. you might have thought that i was "going around blaming something i don't know about" but if you notice i was asking a question. if you see above, i was referring to the older (more than a few months) games. i don't think anything i said up there would count as "blame", merely a question. :/

Hi! ^_^

I misunderstood too since you said that Windows 7 "apparently not a great as it seems" but, after watching the "?" next to that I can say that you're not blaming and you're just wanting to know how this OS works. :)
Anyway... I'm using Windows 7 since VERY early pre-Beta stage (builds 69xx) and even in that old builds I haven't had problems with lots of old and new games that still are working in my PC with my final RTM version and worked before with Vista and XP.
But, in spite of that, I'm surprised to see lots of that games posted in this forums because they doesn't work properly, hangs or even doesn't works at all.
Usually that problems are caused by outdated drivers (usually for 7's Beta editions or Vista), modified drivers (for example, tweaked drivers or custom drivers for discontinued hardware that Windows 7 doesn't support), malware, conflicting software, user inexperience, etc.
About old games, I can say that casually this last days I was feeling nostalgic and I've been playing on my Windows 7 RTM x64 my old copies of Sonic CD (with unofficial XP patch), Sonic & Knuckles Collection (with official "Fast PC" patch), Soul Reaver 1 & 2, Mega Man X4 and lots of others oldies and not-so-old games like Melty Blood Act Cadenza, GTA Vice City & San Andreas, Bike Banditz, Devil May Cry 3 & 4, Prince of Persia (the last one), Resident Evil 4, Street Fighter Alpha 2, Street Fighter 4, The Queen Of Heart 99 ~Dream Match Never Ends~, Virtua Tennis 1 & 3, Crazy Taxi and... oh, sorry. My list is very long. ^_^U
The worst problem I've had was with old 256 colors, fullscreen games, Like QoH '99 and Sonic & Knuckles Collection, but nothing that can't be fixed disabling Aero and tweaking here and there. :p
So, if you've some really old game that you can't run on Windows 7, just search or ask on this forums and you'll get your answer and your game working. :)

Hope it helps you. ;)
Sayonara! :D

One thing that has to be taken into account here is that if 98 of 100 people have absolutely no issue with a game, or any other application, it is only the 2 people with a problem that will post a request for a solution on the forum.

So the suggestion is that 100% of people have issues where in fact it is 2%, and these issues may not be related to the OS in the first place ;)

Should one believe that everybody that has a problem posts it on a forum? Some people will seek a solution on their own, some will write the problem off and some are simply not comfortable with the idea of posting.

EDIT: While I know that some people have less problems than others, I can't believe that there is anyone that has none.

Any solution that leads you to make the game you need to play working is acceptable. Seeker Meister is right too. Who never had issues with games before? I think that everybody who had installed at least 10 games in your life. :p I'm reffering in PCs in general, not just in Windows 7.
So, you can ask for help in forums if you want, research by yourself through other information sources, apply your own notions and knowledge about computers or, if you don't want to do nothing that I mentioned before, maybe you don't want to sweat so much to make a single game work. :o

thx for the input guys. didn't mean to sound like a jerk coolness. Age of Empires won't work for me...the purple water (just in middle of water) is a small issue but the biggest thing for me is that i can't see the menu options and resource bars up top. changed resolution in the game, NVIDIA, and the desktop. nothing

I've posted a thread here but I think part of the problem lies in whats installed on your pc. I built a pc just for games - and only for games - the only installed apps are Microsoft Security Essentials, HWInfo32, EA Download Manager courtesy of Crysis Warhead and the necessary updates and drivers. There is also probably bits of DRM and SecuROM hanging around too. I won't be installing too many more apps, if any, and anyone should check what is installed on their and any possible conflicts.

As an aside. don't use compatibility mode unless 7 does it automatically or you need it. Games seem smoother without it, but running as admin doesn't seem to affect the FPS as much as compatibility mode.
