Troubleshoot and Diagnostic Policy not started

There is something going on with those .dll files needed to run the DPS. I am seeing solutions from registry edits to Group Policy changes, but not one solid solution.

There are permissions broken, and files that are not linking up in order to get the DPS to run.
Have you tried creating, and using a different User with Admin rights to see if that makes a difference?

Not yet, but I am afraid you may have to run that Repair Install or better still, a Clean Install.

It seems the best solution so far .

@Anak, I have run check disk followed by scannow and...didn't work.

Gone through BitD and found nothing relevant.

Event logs....

The HomeGroup Provider service depends on the Function Discovery Provider Host service which failed to start because of the following error:
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.

The Network List Service service depends on the Network Location Awareness service which failed to start because of the following error:
The dependency service or group failed to start.

And.....

The Diagnostic System Host service terminated with the following error:
The requested control is not valid for this service.

I guess you could open up group policy and enable it and set it you can do this under computer configuration: Type group in the search bar and click on edit group policy. Navigate to the place in the screen shots and make the selections and click apply. You'll know immediately if it works when you run the tool again there no need for reboot.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\DPS\Parameters
Permission needed: Full Control, Read"

I checked and Trusted Installer was there with the permissions, but I noticed other locations only had "read" permission.

Mine too for trusted installer...would you mind seeing what permissions are set for the others please? Mine are "read" only. I didn't mean trusted installer was only read, just the other locations are.

This event log significant? Or is it just telling there is a problem but not what it is?

I'm thinkin that maybe like Anak said a repair or a clean install would be the best I had a similar issue stonebear and everything I thought of was pointless because the install came from one of my modded dvd's and I got them mixed up with my clean full version of windows. Anyhow I just redid the computers it was easier to fix it that way than trying to piece meal it. If those .dll's are missing then its probably your only hope.. By the way did you search for the dps.dll and check the permissions. It should have all of them set on trusted installer except for special permissions.

Check out the latest problem, lol. This is despite disabling BitD firewall and re-enabling Windows Firewall.

I must be psychic because for some reason the thought came to check the firewall.

I have never known so many problems spring from one piece of software, I wish I had never installed it.

Believe me I have some suites control a lot of processes and take over the permissions. Acronis does this as well...Do a clean install like Anak directed you to in his previous post. It will be a lot better..

I am gonna un-install BitD first. Even then I bet it leaves a load of problems and I will have to fresh install anyway.

BitDefender is gone but the problem remains, not surprised really, it might not have been the cause and even if it was, removing it wouldn't necessarily fix it.

I just know I have had problem after problem since installing it, some of those were definitely down to BitD - adding files to the system reserved making it too full to do a system image with Windows backup, for example. I started a thread on that a few days ago.

If you do have anything of value on the HDD try to save it.

If we are getting into permissions, i will have to bow out because I have no access in my 7 Home Premium to the Group Policy Editor.



The only other suggestion I would have would be to start windows with only the bare necessities back in msconfig.

Go to the services tab > Check, Hide all MS Services >Disable whats left >then reboot...

If DPS is running okay now, then it is something in those disabled services that is causing the problem.

The general tab would have selective startup checked along with the Load system services with the Load startup items blued out because you made a selection back on the services tab.

You can also do selective startup with the Startup tab, and launch Windows TroubleShooting from the Tools tab.
