Trovi Virus - help to remove please

Uh, I do remember it asking me about freeing up space. I said yeah >.< I was just coming to tell you 3 hours and 10 mins left. Now I don't know if it's even running right.

When the main defrag is done
Open the Action menu
Mouse over the Advanced menu pick to expand the sub menu
Select Defrag Freespace

I just started the above.

Thanks.

Ok, just so I'm clear...

You ran Defraggler once (the main defrag as in your quote above) and that took quite a while.
I'm confused by your statement I do remember it asking me about freeing up space ... that sounds like a different utility.

This is why I said we need to go step by step and only run one thing at a time. You can help me out by using the name of the utility you're running (not it asked or it's running ..). I'm also helping other members and I can get confused between threads ;)

Since you're on the Defraggler step, where are you in the process?
1) Main defrag done or running
2) Freespace done or running?

Let me know when both defrags are done. You're inches away from the goal line!

Thanks,

Bill

Main defrag is done and this is the freespace running now. For hours already. Note the time remaining

Going to bed. I'll be back in the morning. :)

Ok thanks, I was pretty sure that's where you were (on the freespace defrag), but wanted to be sure.

The disk was badly fragmented, at least by my book. The main defrag reorganizes the files, the freespace defrag reorganizes.... well the freespace making it easier (faster) for the system to write new files.

It's really strange. I've seen Defraggler report greater than a day to defrag some of my drives, but that quickly drops to five or six hours. Then it gets down to one minute and takes 30 minutes to finish. Go figure - it's an estimated time based on what it has done and what it thinks it has left to do.

When you get the chance, download this batch file (SFlistClean.bat)

Open a standard Command Prompt and type
Downloads\SFlistClean
exit

The batch file lists the following folders: Downloads, Desktop, and your user temp and creates a text file named SFcleanup.txt in your user folder.

Please attach the SFcleanup.txt file to your next post.
(use the paperclip icon on the posting menu bar to attach the file)

I'll look through the list and see if anything from our work needs to be cleaned up. I can build another batch file to do the actual cleanup.

After that, I think you're finished with this exercise.

Thanks for being so patient.

I am apparently not doing this last step correctly. I downloaded that sf clean thingy, brought up the command prompt, typed what you told me to and I don't see any log on my desktop.

Thank you

I must have missed where you did a Clean Reinstall after I already explained that having a windows.old folder means the partition wasn't even formatted

In the time this has dragged on annoyingly perhaps hundreds of happy users have actually done the reinstall we specialize in here out of millions who also have the best install one can have of Win7.

Yet when I offered to help you do this personally you threw it back in my face with so little grace I can only sit and watch the slow motion train wreck.

I will repeat: You would hAve a perfect install better than 99% of all others had you cooperated, like tens of thousands of others without a single complaint.

I must have missed where you did a Clean Reinstall after I already explained that having a windows.old folder means the partition wasn't even formatted  So don't misrepresent that you have anything close to a clean install when you have a train wreck.

A disk becomes fragmented over time when files are written and deleted.

When files are deleted, Windows marks the space as free. The next write operation uses free space.. A small file can fit in some of the free space, but larger files have to use free space that is scattered across the drive - this is a fragmented file.

You tried a few times to re-install Windows and that was a lot of writes. The re-install created the Windows.old folders and you subsequently deleted them - that was a lot of deletes.

Your disk basically looked like Swiss cheese as far as free space went. ;)

Had you been successful at a Clean install, none of the operations you've done would have been necessary. The disk would have been wiped clean (no malware, no fragmentation, no Windows.old folders...) and a fresh Windows would have been installed.

I know you tried to follow the instructions for a Clean re-install, but for whatever reason, you ended up doing a Repair install. It's not as uncommon as you might think, one missed step in the instructions is all it takes.

The re-install is a moot point at this stage.
I am not suggesting that you try it again.

The batch file writes SFcleanup.txt to your user folder, not the desktop.
- please attach C:\Users\LI\SFcleanup.txt to a post - thanks.

Greg ... Simply, I don't understand how you explain things. I thought I explained how frustrated I get when I can't understand something for the 3rd time. I said it's not you it's me. I also said you were impatient but I totally understood why you'd be impatient with me. I'm thick headed. Didn't I say all this? So I'm sorry that I got impatient with trying to understand your directions becuz I felt like shyt about myself! People explain differently. I just happen to understand Bill. Now I'm uncooperative? wth? Don't tell me that I'm ungracious when I completely explained why you can't help me.

Here Bill

Thanks, it will take a while to build the batch file to do the cleanup.

Please be a little more cautious than you have been when surfing the net or downloading anything. Take a little extra time and ask yourself "Is this safe? Do I really need this? Do I know and trust the website or author? How many other people use this application?" After a while you get conditioned to automatically ask those questions. I still have to think twice before hitting the download button.

I asked before, but it might have been buried -
Do you have an external drive that you can use to back up your system?
Now would be a very good time to create a system image.
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/663-backup-complete-computer-create-image-backup.html
The blue note box and the yellow tip box at the beginning related to keeping multiple images. You're only going to make the one, so you can skip those tow boxes.

But do read the green information and the pink warning boxes to familiarize yourself with the process.

Then just follow the steps and write the image to an external drive.

Other than that please check your Window Update settings. I'm not sure where we left them, there was a lot going on back then.

I think it's best if you automatically update Windows on a schedule (Daily at 03:00 AM is the default).

I officially return the machine to your care. ;)

Good job!

Bill

Here you are...

SFdoClean.bat will remove all of the portable utilities, reports and shortcuts used in this thread to clean up the viruses.

A few notes and then I'm done and you're done :)

I left Old Time - TFC on your system (Downloads\TFC) at Jacee's suggestion.

The batch file removes the few Desktop icons that were created for some of the installed programs (superantispyware for example). If you need to run any of those programs, the shortcut is still on your start menu > all programs.

And we are done! Be safe, be cautious and keep your machine clean.

Excellent - the system image might save you a lot of time if ever needed (hopefully not though)

Ok, good - Windows Update is automatic and on schedule.

You are most welcome.

Please click on the middle icon (group of 3 in the upper right hand corner - it's a scale) on any of Jacee's posts - she really helped both of us... big time! This is a way to say thank you to her.
