A while back I had used Truecrypt. But I deleted the download. But later learned that the makers of Truecrypt dropped support and removed their latest program 7.1a download.

I know there are a couple of links claiming to have an unmolested copy of 7.1a copy i.e. not viruses or maleware. Anyone done any testing to confirm this on those links?

I was looking to re-download it, but learned of them removing the download from their official site.

Looked at alternative, but looks like people still recommend sticking with Truecrypt for the time being.

Truecrypt issues?

Well you could condider Veracrypt. It's Truecrypt reworked with the known vulnerabilities removed and yes it can also open existing Truecrypt volumes. I use it and have both old Truecrypt volumes and more recent Veracrypt volumes that can both be mounted using Veracrypt.

If you want to know more:

Why is this more secure than TrueCrypt?

I've heard about Veracrypt. A Truecrypt modification. I had read the makers of Truecrypt say there are things in their code that only they know what it is. And so they had recommended to avoid using modified versions of their Truecrypt.

I'm still looking around and checking things out.

Modified 2nd link in my earlier post - fixed it so that it now works. Note: Truecrypt passwords can be recovered from memory using software like OSForensics and the standalone version of Volatility. I know this because I tried to recover my own passwords and was sucessful. I'm using TrueCrypt 7.1.1.0 that I downloaded and installed a long time ago. Or rather I don't actually use it these days but it's still installed.

If you just want encrypted containers rather than whole drive encryption take a look at this post:

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/349420-safehouse-explorer-create-password-protected-usb.html

You can use the same software to create encrypted containers on your hard drive. Other than that I also use other software but hesitate to mention it's name because the installer comes bundled with Adware and there's no choice to opt out so unless you know how to block the Adware from installing it's not software that could be recommended.

EDIT: Just checked and I have TrueCrypt Setup 7.1a.exe downloaded on 27th August 2013 if you really want it.
