I've tried about 6 times to install win7 on my system and I gave up.

SYSTEM:
Motherboard: ASUS p4s800 dx
RAM: 4Mb
Video card: ATI Radeon 9600 with 256 of memory
2 SATA HD: 500 gb & 1 tb
PROMISE SATA CARD: Original drivers.
Sound card: Creative X-FI Music (drivers for Vista because there are no drivers available for Win7 as of now.

The problem is that no sooner do I have Win7 ultimate installed, it crashes over and over. Last time it happened just as I chose a background for the desktop. So, I changed the desktop and the system was working nicely, until I installed Java.

I use Opera browser but the crashes are frequent and they happen also when using IE.

I have mutlthreading in the Bios but disabled it.

Frankly, I don't know what else to do and have now gone back to my faithful XP which is almost crash proof.

Any advice? Thanks in advance.

Well first I think you need more RAM (4mb isn't much) any BIOS updates available? I needed one to fix my laptop.

Windows won't install on 4MB of Ram and neither will anything else. I think he means 4GB.

Try Safe Mode.

You didn't say whether it was 64-bit or 32-bit. When I first installed the beta I installed 32-bit. It ran fine. I upgraded my RAM and installed 64-bit. For a week, I had occasional crashes but then my computer quit booting. I learned that either my processor or motherboard was defective with 64-bit and worked fine with 32-bit. When my motherboard and processor were replaced, under warranty, the problem disappeared.

Don't disable multithreading! You will lose way too much performance.

C:\Windows\Minidump

Use Winrar to compress the files there. Then attach the .rar to a post. You can do this from safe mode + networking if you need to.

I can look at it and tell you a range of reasons why you might be having this problem or possibly narrow it down to one reason.

In the bios, if you have a setting for Plug and Play OS, set it to yes.

Look into "Daniel K." driver for your audio.

Thanks for getting back so quickly.

I'm using the 32bit mode.

Yes, it's 4GB of RAM, although according to the System, only 2.75 are available.

I'll re-install multithreading and try the Plug and Play setting.

Then, I'll give it another go and let you folks know. I'll upload the first dmp file to see how I, with your help, can get to the bottom of this because I cannot believe I'm the only one with this problem.

Many thanks again...

It's a 0x124 error that you could read about here on how to attempt to alleviate them. Most important thing is to read about the overclocking, if you are.

These are the last 2 crashes. Interestingly enough, they are happening while trying to view videos on Utube.

I also installed a fan to cool the unit a little more, but as soon as I clicked on a HD video on Utube, the system crashed at the same time it sent out a piercing noise through my headphones.

Many thanks in advance!

Have you made sure the heatsink is attached to the cpu properly and there is adequate cooling? Also, you mentioned a SATA card - are you using this or a the mobo's controller? Try removing the card and any peripherals to rule out hardware after you check the cooling.

I will connect the SATA drives to the mobo, instead of the Promise card. I'll do that first, then, the sound card. :)

Remove the cards, and enable onboard sound. Then reboot and update chipset and sound drivers. Reboot again to see if this helps with stability.

Yes, the cards and all peripherals removed and then added back singly to rule them out.

But first check BIOS updates as this is common issue.

You should be in the Installation and Setup forum where the installers hang.

First, I’d like to thank all those who offered advice and comments on my problem installing Win7.

As suggested, I cleaned the housing and the case of the CPU and there is not a speck of dust anywhere.

I also took out the Creative SB X-Fi card that I thought might be causing many of the crashes.

The results were as follows:

After cleaning the insides of the PC case, including a thorough dusting of the cooling unit, etc, and installing one additional internal fan, I managed to lower the mobo temp by almost 10 degrees, and the CPU by almost as much.

Present conditions:
CPU: +- 116 degrees (was running at 126)
MB: +- 89 degrees (was running at 100)

Win7 finally began to work as advertised, but now I had no sound card because the onboard sound system for the P4S800 DX MB do not work under Win7 or XP SP3.

In any case, I put the SB X-FI card back in, applied the last drivers available and the moment the PC was pushed... like in viewing HD material in Utube, it crashed.

So there it is. Unfortunately, at this time I have no money to spend on a sound card that works with Win7, and since XP is doing so well, I’ll wait until one of two things happen: I get a new sound card or Creative Labs decide to back up their sound cards with real workable drivers for Win7.

In the meantime, I guess I'll stick with XP, which so far continues doing great.

Dude...nice work. You got TorrentG on your side here. Right click on the motherboard's (P4S800 DX MB) onboard audio device in device manager. Properties. Details tab. Change dropdown to hardware ids. Copy and paste the results here.

I'll either find or make a driver work for you.

If you want the SB card to work, search the net for "Daniel K." driver.

Thanks for the offer, but I feel the issue is more than just the SB-XFi driver. I downloaded and installed the Daniel K. driver and it did nothing.

However, since all the crashes happen when I am trying to view something graphically complicated, like HD videos, and other videos in browsers, I have a feeling that the issue relates more to the graphic card, an Radeon 9600.

ATI has refused to put out drivers for this card and instead has posted a sham of a driver Catalyst which they originally put out for Vista.

What I will do is simply wait to get a new machine and I swear on everything precious to me that first, my graphic card WILL NOT be ATI or AMD, and my sound card WILL NEVER BE from Creative Labs.

Furthermore, I think it would be a good thing to post the names of those companies that have taken the trouble to address their clients concerns, by supporting the hardware they sold -graphic cards, sound cards, etc - so everyone that frequents these forums knows which companies take care of their clients and which company are out to fleece people.

Again, thanks for the offer and this time, I will not uninstall Win7 in case a miracle should happen and the drivers for these items become available.

I wouldn't put down ATI in this case. The 9600 is ancient (from ~ early 2003) and it does have a Vista driver that works beautifully under 7.

Creative on the other hand, not so well.

If the Daniel K. driver did nothing though, you probably didn't install it well. Or perhaps your particular id string is missing from the installer .inf. Simple to fix.
