Trying to do a restore but Macrium cannot see the backup drive

I am trying to use macrium reflect to restore a backup image on a new hdd

I boot up using the macrium rescue disk and when it loads it cannot find the external backup drive containing the macrium back up image.

Have tried connecting the backup drive to several different usb ports and that didn't work.

I also checked the external backup drive on another pc and the 298 GB macrium image file is there

Any ideas on what the problem might be or how to proceed

Connect the drive and then check in the BIOS first, before booting the Macrium disc, to see if the drive is detected. If the BIOS is not detecting the drive, Macrium will not detect it.

Assuming your backup drive is USB 3.0, could be your WinPE version on the recovery media doesn't include the USB 3.0 drivers... if you selected an inappropriately low WinPE version when you created the recovery media. Remember Win7 didn't contain built-in USB 3.0 support. Of course the construction process should have copied any drivers from the running Windows which were not already in the version of WinPE selected, so it's strange you can't see it now when booted to that media, no matter what WinPE version was selected originally.

I'd suggest re-making the recovery media (you can create bootable USB media instead of optical, if that is more convenient). Be sure that the USB 3.0 controller/roothub etc. drivers are either already in the version of WinPE you select, or if not are shown as "copied from the drivers folder" and still checked for copying.

One more thought... are you sure you can't see that external USB drive? When you boot to the recovery media and "browse for image", the external drive doesn't necessarily appear in that initial window, depending on the version of WinPE you're using.

With older WinPE versions it could be located inside of "This PC", so you'd have to open "This PC" in order to navigate/scroll down to see the external drive.

For Macrium v6 the pe 5 rescue CD has USB 3 support. It has worked for me.

For a pe 3 rescue disc I needed to install the USB 3 drivers using DISM or mount them manually.
