trying to factory restore acer aspire one d255 but....

From your earlier post you indicated that you gave up at ~an hour. If you now say you've given the restore hours to complete without success then that's different.
Assuming the Netbook is out of warrant, Darryl's suggestion regarding the HDD is worth trying.
Are you going to order Acer recovery disks?

actually it was about two hours, and the little light green spark that runs through the green progress bar stopped once it tryed to install factory mode. also the hdd indicator doesn't flash as often when installing factory mode, it flashes like every 10-20 mins maybe

You reported that Quick test failed with a read error but Extended test passed. This seems to indicate that Quick repaired the Read error. Run Extended again to be sure, then Disk Check from Command Line if necessary.

The HD Diagnostics test is also a Repair which can return HD to service in conjunction with Disk Check clearing file system errors.

MucAfee is cause of so many random problems seen here that I would not be surprised if it is blocking running Factory Recovery, so either try running it from Disk or find the Win7 Installation DVD to get rid of all the bloatware and have a clean Win7 install. Steps in Perfect Reinstall link in my siggy below.
acutally i did another restore after the hdd test, and failed again, well not failed but again, refused to install factory mode. also i don't have a disc drive, since this is a netbook. my processor is running at 1.50ghz

Can you find a Win7 installation DVD to write to flash stick, boot it and clean reinstall Win7?

Steps to get a perfect reinstall are in my signature box below, including the app to write Win7 ISO file to stick.

Unless McAfee itself is genuine malware, which it clearly isn't, I don't see how this is technically possible especially when run from alt F10 at boot.
BTW I don't like or use McAfee.

Someone whose been around the traps awhile is passionate about your need to replace your HDD. I'd be listening - the last thing is to get things set up on a dud drive. They don't cost much.

I think there is another issue that is causing my factory restore problem. in the erecovery managment properties, I had my settings on compatibility for windows XP service pack 3

You have a hardware problem, not a software problem.

If you have a flash stick you can write the Win7 installation ISO to it following the steps in the Perfect Reinstall link in my signature box below. Then try a clean reinstall following the steps closely.

We'll know by the results if the HD is toast, and you'll have the Win7 installer on flash.

Koolsk8ter:

All of us are really trying to help you out. I have gone through the posts in this thread, and as one poster said... it seems like you are looking for an exact one answer fix. Many of us have asked you specific questions, but some remain unanswered. HELP US, HELP YOU! :geek:

Have you tried gregrockers suggestion to create a Win7 install USB and perform a full reinstall?
Do you have access to another PC?
Do you have access to a Win7 DVD?
I have seen many SMART errors reported by other than a drive manufacturers sw be wrong... WD Diagnostics WILL tell you! Download it and report findings please:
WD Support / Downloads / SATA & SAS / WD Caviar Black
Have you checked on the warranty? If so, what is the status?

One poster here insists that your drive is bad, it may or may not be. But at this point we cant do much more without answers...

As for software that CAN repair HDD's... see if you can find a copy of Steve Gibson's SpinRite software... TRY IT... it CAN repair some HDD issues! ...but it is expensive!

Here is the workaround:

Wait for a while (e.g. half an hour) then just press Alt+F4. You will see normal Windows desktop, then restart the computer.

Worked for me...

What I did then; I've uninstalled Mcafee, stopped some unnecessary services and startup programs from "msconfig", then restarted the computer and installed microsoft security essentials. Try it!
