Hello, new to the forum. I just got a refurbed windows 7 pro 64 bit HP computer and I'll just say all is good and now I need an antivirus program, looking thru forums people seem to suggest MSE so I went to microsoft.com/security_essentials but the url redirects and it's MS page for get windows 11. I don't plan on being online much I mainly got the computer to put laserdiscs and vhs tapes and CED discs onto a hard drive to watch them that way but occasionally I would go online, say to download the things i need for the capture of video, but I want to have antivirus and don't really care which one . So if someone could tell me how to get MSE or suggest another AV I would appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

You will need the sha2 update because the update definitions require it
windows6.1-kb4474419-v3-x64.msu

:ar: https://catalog.s.download.windowsu..._b5614c6cea5cb4e198717789633dca16308ef79c.msu

and to connect needs

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\WinHttp]
"DefaultSecureProtocols"=dword:00000a00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\WinHttp]
"DefaultSecureProtocols"=dword:00000a00

or the ms fixit which does the above reg settings.

In addition, as a minimum on a new win7 install I also suggest
Windows6.1-KB3138612-x64.msu

:ar: https://download.microsoft.com/down...585-f6814663f1a9/Windows6.1-KB3138612-x64.msu

so windows update can work

I hate to admit it but I have no idea what any of that means? I didn't want to go into the problem that I have with the new computer as I want to get some sort of antivirus before I start in on the problem which is the wifi / bluetooth adapter is an internal card. The company selling the computers is techleaf and they are trying to help. Anyway, the card does not have a driver installed. Techleaf told me to run windows update , which I did and I forget now I think it installed 92 updates? I had to run update maybe 3 or 4 times and it finally stated windows is up to date, so i believe it's up to date. I connected it with an ethernet cable, that's how I was able to update, but it still didn't update the wifi card. So what I want to do next is get some kind of antivirus program. On all my other computers I just use what microsoft supplies and I've never had any problems and I saw topics / comments on this forum to just download MSE , but I can't find a download for it. So maybe my next step would be to get some type of antivirus and I'd like it to be free. On the new computer there is an install avg antivirus icon so instead of MSE is avg a good option? I don't know if that's free or not.
I appreciate the responses but I have really no idea what any of them mean, but I have ran update and it has fully updated at least according to the statement when I select "check for updates".
So I guess I'd like next step to be an antivirus so I can download the things I need for my video capturing, once I get the things I want / need as far as video capture and what not I plan on disconnecting the new computer from the internet and after that I don't even feel like I'd re-connect it to the internet. The computer I'm using now and use alot is about 20 feet from the new computer so if there is some need to access the internet I can just use this computer I'm using now.
I'm sorry for being "longwinded" I just didn't want to go into the wifi problem as I didn't feel that's important in relation to trying to obtain AV software, but I guess I should have stated I did run update a few times until it stated "fully up to date".

wow that was quick, i just read a recnet pc mag article about avg and the basic is free and it seemed like it was thoroughly tested so I think I'll install the free version, the article did mention they do try to push the paid edition, but not too much. I don't even remember when I last used anything but what microsoft has provided ? After I get the avg running I'll do the MSE thing and report back. It probably won't be tonight though. I do appreciate the response and I understand that one.

I'm already back, can I put that zip file on a thumb drive and install from that? I don't even know if windows 7 unzips files or not, I almost think a long time ago I went from xp to windows 8? That was a long time ago. I'm just trying to avoid going onto the internet without AV but I don't really want to install AVG and then try to install MSE as I'm thinking there may be some conflict? Like I said, a long time since I've gave any thought to AV protection and even longer since I've used windows 7 , if at all.

just to touch base, i got mse installed it installed immediately, then updated immed. and scanned immed. with no input from me and then I got notified windows needs updating so I ran windows update a couple times and got all fully updated and went back into MSE and it stated fully protected and I quit messing with it at that point. So I haven't tried to update it manually but at least I have AV on there now. Maybe later today I'll try to hit the check for updates and see what happens. I don't really understand why I'm getting notifications to update windows as I thought they no longer support 7? My only thought is maybe because it's a fresh install and has the rainbow type sticker with the version number or whatever to verify the copy of windows? So microsoft supports it? This company sells like 1000's of refurbs so I suppose they have some sort of deal with microsoft? I don't know how that works but I wonder if that's why it seems to still being supported? Like i said I don't know how all the licensing or whatever would work? Anyway, thanks for the help thus far, at least I have some AV on there now.

i got the MSE installed and I guess it's updating it automaticly even though I thought I set it to don't check for updates. Also the problem of no driver for the wireless card, i ran snappy driver installer origin and my wifi is detected and device manager states everything is working properly so hopefully I'm all set. I'm going to wait a few daysbefore stating solved, I just want to try to download the stuff I need and make sure all stays good. Thanks for the help
