Trying to install SP1, Error E_FAIL(0x80004005)

Hi,

i'm getting this error when trying to install SP1, tried with AV off & everything else shut down, but nothing seems to work.
tried the MS troubleshooter & installed a fix for something from MS as well, think it was the system readiness update tool

on Win 7, 32bit home

i've also attached a CBS log from today

There are a number of bad errors in the CBS log - the worst being that the system was unable to open the COMPONENTS registry hive
This implies that the hive is corrupted.
How long have you been struggling with this? - when was the last time the system installed any updates?

the system updates ok, like just the other day, it's just SP1 that it fails on
