Trying to install Ubuntu

Hard to rule on that one...due to the fact that I am experimenting with an ALPHA (so you know how that goes). Could be the VM so I am going to reinstall 9.10 and update it first hand to see if the results replicate themselves. The biggest issues was that it seems that GNOME crashes completey

For the VPC you can rule out any distro there for the obvious reasons. The installation or live boot may finish while the distro simply will not run not being Windows! Problems on other non MS VMs can be from anything.
