I want to stop automatic updates, but have not been able to do this through the Windows Update utility.

In Windows Update Settings, "check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them" is selected.

However, that is not stopping updates. When I view "updated history", I see that updates are ocuring almost daily. For example - Definition Update for Microsoft Security Essentials" was installed 8/21/2011.

Microsoft Security Essentials is not a Windows component and is not controlled by Windows Automatic Updates. All anti-virus products work the same way...automatic updates. Yes, they are daily, it's normal.

Thanks for your reply. Something is "breaking" my Windows Search Function and I assumed it was Updates. When the search function stops working, I restore the system to its state the day prior and it works again. I have had to do this every few days (but have not installed any new programs). So, if it's not Windows update, it's hard to imagine what else it could be
