Turning off during updates rendered my version of Win 7 illegitimate.

Firstly, just as the staff at Windows support instructed me, what's occurred to me seems illegal. So, yes, I'm aware that my problem looks sketchy. Now, I turned my computer off early in the morning today, and when I got home around 6:00, I tried to power it on and noticed that it was still in the "Installing updates" stage of when you power down, and it was only on "2/11". So, I thought, "eh", and held the power button down. When I powered it back up, I was greeted with a text box that informed me that my version of Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit was not genuine, and that I needed to validate it. I was soon chatting with a rather solicitous support agent from Windows, and he told me that since my product key was flagged as being blocked, I had to buy either a replacement or purchase a new version of Windows. I did not favor either of those suggestions, and that lead me here. I don't understand why Windows would consider the product key for my version of Windows illegal, simply because I powered it off during updates. Can anyone give further explanation or another suggestion?

Well when you shut down Windows down in the middle of installing updates anything can happen.

If you can boot please complete this tutorial by Brink and post results here so are experts can take a look.

Well now I see the problem. That key has been blocked because it was and is a stolen key from the Lenovo company.

I have no idea who install the key. All I know is that it will not work because it was block because it was stolen from the Lenovo factory.

...and is responsible for about 10% of the number of fake copies of Windows 7 Ultimate I see in the forums.

@Cinerai - This machine (or at least the motherboard) was manufactured in 2006 - before even Vista came out!

You should jump down the vendor's throat, and demand a full refund, as it's likely that the machine is very much under-specified for windows 7, and is likely to cause problems as a result.

Thank you to everyone who replied to my question. One final question, however: why was the illegal key only found after the issue with the restart? Could Windows not have flagged it as illegitimate sooner?

Microsoft has billions of computer to check so it takes a lot of time. Your system was just farther down the list so it took a while.
Some that use a counterfeit operating system hid it better than others.
Many people like you have a counterfeit and don't even know it for a long time.
It would be hard for me to believe that the person who install your system didn't know. If it was me I would be chasing that person down and get my money back for the system.
