TWAIN scanner drivers compatibility problem

Hello everyone.
I'm experiencing a driver compatibility issues with the Canon 9000F scanner.
I already opened a thread about it but I feel like the topic was too specific to the Canon error code that no one would ever replay.
If any moderators believe that my previous post (http://www.sevenforums.com/hardware...driver-issue-code-5-202-49-a.html#post3064977) has no sense, please delete it but not this one.

I've done some research and I found out that the scanner works well with the WIA drivers (Windows Image Acquisition) but the options are a bit limited.
Unfortunately the TWAIN drivers that feature the Canon don't work, this is a common issue for Canon scanners and Canon has no solution for it but just telling customers useless scripts that don't fix the problem.

So is anyone here aware of any fix, solution, trick etc. etc. that would make the TWAIN drivers work?
I'm testing VueScan and it works but why I've to buy another software when I already paid for it with the scanner?
Canon = very very disappointing, if I knew, I wouldn't buy its products, but from now on no more Canon.

Have you tried the Drivers and Software listed at Canon U.S.A. : Support & Drivers : CanoScan 9000F ? I checked the page from my Win7 Ultimate 64-bit and it appears what is needed is there. The driver listed is also listed for Win8.1 64-bit. I don't care for the way Canon does software separately, HP usually has a download that is the same as on the CD that comes with their units.

I already tried the drivers from US, EU, and AU none of these fix the problem.
It's a very stressing and time wasting effort to make this scanner work, uninstalling and reinstalling, restart, clean registry left over etc. etc. we live in 2015 but a pity (and misleading) manufacturer isn't able to understand why the drivers for its products don't work.

I don't know if this will address your needs, but I've been using SilverFast 8.5 Ai Studio scanning software with my own Epson Perfection 4990 Photo scanner for many many years. Operates flawlessly. I scan to TIF simply using the standalone SilverFast scanner software, and then simply open the TIF with PhotoShop CS6. But the same software can be launched (TWAIN) from IMPORT within PhotoShop itself. But does it really matter how you get the TIF into PhotoShop??

They also support hardware from many other vendors, of course including Canon and the CanoScan 9000F.

They do provide a SilverFast demo for download for your 9000F scanner, if you want to try it for yourself. Seems worth a shot.

That demo page for SilverFast Ai for the Canon 9000F also provides a link to the Canon USA site for driver download, which led me to this page. I have to assume you've been here already, but I'm providing the link just in case.

Note that Lasersoft is an active, viable company (located in Germany, US office in Florida) with an active product that seems to release software updates almost monthly (latest 8.5 0.r4 for me was dated 4/29/15). They have excellent English support via email, and I've even phoned them on occasion to get very specific questions answered.

Anyway, since the SilverFast demo software won't cost you anything, I'm passing on these links just in case you want to experiment and see if your issues are addressed satisfactorily.

Your suggestion is very very helpful.
Unfortunately Silverscan is not free though I found that some Canon 9000F were dispatched with a free version of Silverscan SE, that would be my solution.
There is no point for me to install the trial version because then I need to uninstall it and leave homeless files sparse in the registry.
I tried a web based utility which acts as a virtual TWAIN scanner, well that didn't work simply because the Canon TWAIN drivers have problems.
The scanner is pretty new and I bought it in case sometimes I need to scan something, now the time has came BUT I'm wasting my free time to troubleshoot Canon's problems.

Thanks GokAy, the first link is about Windows not detecting the scanner which is not my case and the other one suggested to run the drivers in compatibility mode, done that also but it didn't work.

True. But almost always, you get what you pay for.

Free means free, so what legitimate right do you feel you have to expect product support, ongoing bug fixes and enhancements, etc.? None. Who pays the developer for time spent? Nobody. Sounds like a 1-man shop, with only "pride of authorship" leading to continued ongoing fixes and product evolution.

In contrast, paying a vendor outright for purchase as well as possibly additional annual periodic maintenance fees for ongoing maintenance, upgrades and free access to new versions, well now they're receiving well-deserved payment for their development effort. They can afford to run a company (i.e. more than a 1-man show) and allocate proper resources to product development. You have expectations about this relationship that you couldn't have for any free product (which often end up as "legacy", i.e. available for free download from CNET or similar, with zero official further expectations).

As you'd imagine, I'm a software person myself... and I understand fully the fact that this is my business, and I expect to be paid for my services should you choose to make use of them. I am fully in line with paying other software people for their products or services when the price is justified, and am not looking only for "free" giveaways as my criteria.

SilverFast Ai is not free, correct. But if you try the demo and it does what you want and solves your problems, perhaps you will then feel the price to be justified. After all, THEY DEVELOPED IT... why are they obligated to give it to you for free? Why can't they sell it for money, and thus remain in business so that they can continue to develop and support it??

Again, you mean SilverFast SE, not Silverscan SE. This is product version "for beginners", and I guess may have been bundled with some scanner hardware. Back in the mid-90's I received a bundled version of Adobe Photoshop 3 as the application program when I bought a Microtek flatbed scanner (which came with Microtek driver and scanning software). Depends on the hardware vendor.

In the case of your Canon 9000F, I assume that like with Epson there must be bundled Canon drivers plus scanning software (as there is with Epson), which may or may not be fabulous. You do have reasonable expectations that the drivers will of course work, but the elegance of the application scanning software on top of it... well, not necessarily. I personally hate everything HP provides as application software (i.e. other than its basic hardware drivers), so just because it's free from the hardware vendor doesn't mean they really care about it. After all, they're giving it away to you "for free" as part of the total bundled price, and don't really have much personal involvement.

In contrast, Lasersoft is a software company specifically in the business of supporting scanners, printers, etc., and their SilverFast product is what they sell. They have REASON to make it work perfectly and meet all of your needs.

Personally, I don't agree with this thinking.

You try a non-free product via demo to decide if it meets your needs or not, and if it does you then decide if the price can be justified for your needs. If you use something once every 2 years if that, then maybe no paid product is justified. On the other hand, maybe it's worth a reasonable price to be able to have exactly what you want and need every 2 years.

I never consider leftover registry entries (or, perhaps folders in C:\Program Files, C:\ProgramData, etc.) left over after an uninstall as a motivator for whether or not to try a demo out, because quite frankly I don't expect these to occur (if the install/uninstall is correct). Or even if they do, I consider Control Panel -> uninstall is sufficient to accomplish all that is really needed. Worst case, a "sloppy uninstall" can be followed up with my own manual purge of registry, or deletion of leftover C-folders.

Bottom line: giving a demo a spin is trying out a product for purchase. I'm investigating the product because it promises to provide me with capability I don't currently have, but need, and which I can't find any other suitable alternative source for... from either some free or other non-free product. I'm fully prepared to pay for software that someone else developed and that I want to use. I don't expect to get it for nothing from someone else.

It's all up to you, as to how to proceed.

If you feel Canon's software (drivers or application software) is broken or defective or inadequate, your issue is with them. If you're completely unsatisfied, return the product and get a refund if you can, and go with something else (e.g. from Epson or other vendor). Maybe you'll have better luck with a different product and/or vendor.

If you want additional capability or quality (as I did with my Epson scanner, which like with Canon does provide its own scanning application software... THAT I DO NOT USE SINCE I PREFER SILVERFAST!), perhaps investing additional money in 3rd-party software (e.g. SilverFast) will only now finally completely satisfay your needs, which the free bundled software from the hardware vendor did not.


Anything "really good" in life is certainly worth waiting for. And if it's worth having and waiting for, then almost always these are also worth paying for, buying them from whoever was talented enough to make it in the first place.

So why should someone else more talented than you in a particular area work for free, making something that they then give to you for nothing?

I have no problem buying non-free software when it's what I'm looking for, and virtually always opting for the additional functionality and ad-free performance of "non-free pro" phone app versions. They're in the business of building software products for sale, and I'm in the market as a paying customer for their products, same as everywhere for other non-free products.

TWAIN is now deprecated - modern scanners don't use TWAIN any more --I had an old excellent canon photo and negative scanner which I still run on a Windows XP VM.

VUESCAN still works for a lot of these older (and very serviceable) scanners but if you don't want to pay for VUESCAN and you have an old XP system somewhere just run the XP system as a VM and your scanner should still work.

That's always a problem with technology -- companies won't support older hardware indefinitely - and even Windows 7 is going to run into lack of support sooner or later.

My advice is simply to run the XP VM -- don't worry about security or issues like that - you don't have to connect the XP VM to the internet - you just want your scanner to run. Once you've got your TIFF (or whatever output your scanner gives you) process it on W7 in the normal way.

I thoguht that the TWAIN drivers are an alternative with more functionality to the Windows' WIA, in fact if you go on the TWAIN web site, you'll see that they are developing a more recent version.
I'm running Windows 7 64bit with the latest Canon TWAIN drivers specific to Windows 7, I think that Canon might have stuffed with Microsoft and doesn't want to pay for their loyalties so that is why the drivers have compatibility issues, unless Canon is able to tell me that they fixed the problems.
As I said the Windows WIA (Windows fax and scanner) drivers work well just they have a limited functionality.
