Two active partitions on same drive?

I was working on a user's PC for a separate issue when I noticed something odd. She has a single 1TB drive with two partitions (C: and D. Her user profile is on C: and that's where the windows install is but the computer would not let me delete the D: volume as it said it was active. can I simply right click the C:, mark it as active then delete the D: volume? Also, how come C: does not show "Systems"

Ideally I would like to remove D: then extend the C: drive fully

D is marked as "system" because that's where the boot files are. Not what you want.

If you want to delete D, you'd have to copy the boot files to C and make sure C is shown as active. I think a tool called EasyBCD can do that and there is a tutorial on this site for it.

Thanks. I mean the system is up and running fine so I don't want to purchase any software if we don't need to. Maybe a good time to upgrade her to an SSD and do a clean install

Microsoft terminology can be a little strange at times. There is a boot partition that contains the system or Windows files and the system partition that contains the boot files. They can be on the same partition. I don't know why it is that way.

EasyBCD is free.

But if you want to do a clean install and an SSD, that's probably a good idea.
