Two Page Numbering Schemes in Same Document - Word 2010

I am trying to format a very long manuscript and am having a page numbering issue.

I know how to link/unlink headers and footers and create numbering within sections. So, my chapters are sectioned and numbered and each chapter starts with page 1.

I also need a running total of pages. I can't seem to have two formats in the same header (a section page numbering and an overall page numbering) so I planned to put the chapter numbers in the headers (unlinked to previous) and the total page numbering in the footer because they can still be linked.

Sounded good, but when I format the page numbering to start with '1' in the header, even though it is unlinked, the page formatting changes in the footer.

Is there any way around this?

I'm using Word 2010 in Microsoft Office Professional 2010 and Windows 7 Professional, if that helps.

Thanks.

Thanks, Ranger 4. That info describes how I number each chapter (section) so each new section starts with page 1.

My difficulty was, while keeping this numbering scheme set up, also having a running total of all the pages of the whole manuscript.

So Chapter 3 might have 45 pages, but page 45 would also be the 120th page overall. I can't seem to get that second count separated. When I format the page numbering for the chapters to start from 1, in the header, the running page number changes also to 1, in the footer. Formatting the page number seems to be universal for the page, not separate in header and footer.

If anything comes to you, please let me know. I found someone who suggested programming bookmarks and bookmark page numbers then adding them up, but somehow that didn't work out for me.

Thanks, again.

Thanks for getting back. I can certainly see your problem, but I can't find anything on keeping a running page total that you need.

I know it's irritating but I suppose the only way is to do it is the manual adding up method, old fashioned but it works. :)

Thanks, Ranger4.

I might have someone, who doesn't get bleary-eyed when looking at VB code, put something together for me.

I'm told that there is way to it with VB.

Thanks again.
