Solved Word 2010:Page Number option greyed out

If I open a new document in Word 2010 and select the Insert tab, the Page Number option in the Header and Footer group is greyed out.

Mmm. I am using Win7 x64 and MS2010 too. Perhaps its in the setup somewhere. I'll have a look and see what I can find.

Hey Ken,

I had a bit of a look around, but I'm a bit stumped. Can I suggest this:

1. Open a blank document.
2. Right click near the top of the blank page.
3. Do you see a popup called "Edit Header"?
4. If so, click it. Do the header options appear near the top left corner of your ribbon? Like this:

Well done! The extraordinary thing is that, having done the right click once or twice, as you suggested on new documents, I no longer need to do this. I just open the new document select the Insert tab and the Page Numbering is no longer greyed out. Thanks again.

Cool Ken. Glad its all OK.

Cool...but I have the same problem with Wndows 7 and Word 2007 ...the page numbering is greyed out...however, doing the above did not do the trick. I also tried to delete (as is mentioned on other sites) the BuildingBlocks.dotx" file, still with no results. Any other ideas? Would really appreciate it!

i know, I was about the give up and add the page numbers in text boxes(!), so very glad I found this. Cheers!
