Interresting lists and VERY interesting thread. I learn a lot here. Being Dutch I speak 4 languages fluent. But that's because I have lived in England and France and now 4 years in Tirol Austria. It's a good way to broaden the mind and understand different points of view . I am a good listener have no TV and read books made out of dead trees but buy them always 2 de hand.

I don't "die hard defend" everything regarding Windows 10. That simply is not true. Of course you might get that impression selectively reading my posts, only choosing those I have posted in threads similar to this, threads where any positive news about Windows 10 will immediately be distorted and twisted by the haters army.

If you would read my other posts, too, you'd notice that I have nothing against seriously discuss about issues in Windows 10, especially in the Insider Preview builds. I am a Windows Insider installing new builds as soon as they will be released, to be part of the community. I report issues I find, post about them on the forums and actively participate the discussions.

Windows 10 is the best operating system MS has ever made. It's my personal subjective opinion, but not only that. Vast majority of for instance Ten Forums members share this opinion, a fact you will not see if you selectively read only the threads where already the thread title tells that it will be an anti-10 thread.

I have always openly admitted I am a Windows 10 fan boy . I am not sure if this basic attitude of mine has anything to do with it but my highly personalized Windows 10 machines behave flawlessly, are fast and reliable. You don't see me posting "Windows is not working" when I am unable to find or understand a new feature; instead I go to the forums and Interwebs in general to find documentation about it and learn to use it.

Most of the objection and hate talk is clearly motivated by "status quo over change", objecting change, ignorance and paranoia.

As I said I am not sure how much this attitude means when using Windows 10, but a positive attitude for sure makes the whole experience easier and brings less issues. If the starting point is "I hate this. I know I have not used and tested it extensively enough but I don't want to do it because I hate it", we all know how it ends.

I couldn't disagree more with the comment "where ever you look the comments regarding Win 10 around the web are overwhelmingly positive regarding stability and function" , everything i see is issues , issues and more issues.

As I mentioned above, read more. The general reception of Windows 10 has been and is mostly positive.

Of course there are issues but the fact that these issues will be posted as users seek assistance in resolving them does not mean the general opinion would be negative. If that would be true then we had to admit that Windows 7 was and is a total failure; alone here at our Seven Forums, 370,000 members have posted over 3 million posts in about 300,000 threads. Take away the News and Chillout sections, it still leaves over 2.5 million posts mostly about Windows 7 issues.

Of course we know this is not true, Windows 7 is for me the second best OS I have ever used and for quite a many users the best, but doing some selective reading we could read Windows 7 news, about its issues and so on in the same way the haters are now reading about Windows 10: only issues, unhappy users and so on.

Kari also said all the phoning home is about improvement of the system and overall experience , most don't believe that at all and it can't be proved either way .

We really should get a new "Selective Reader" badge for some members here, to indicate that the badge holding member only reads what supports his theories and if nothing found, distorts the words of other members to make them better suit his purposes.

I have never said that "all the phoning home is about improvement of the system and overall experience". I have repeatedly said that I install Windows 10 using its default settings and allow my Windows 10 machines to call home when and as often as they want to or need to, because for the first we are talking only about so small amounts of data that it has none whatsoever effect in my bandwidth usage, and for the second because as MS has told us (I have no reasons not to believe MS), most of the data collected is about my ways to use Windows and its features, to improve Windows and my Windows user experience.

I read threads that appeal to me from the beginning and every post i have read by you has been over the top very pro Win 10 but thats understood , your admit that you are a Win 10 fanboi , at least your honest .

Just a few pages back you said the "phoning home" is strictly about improving Win 10 for the user , many people don't believe that for a minute and like i said it can't be proved at this point .

By the way, on the related matter of privacy and since the use of e-mail cropped up, there are certainly instances where you shouldn't use e-mail at all.

A few days ago, it was brought to the public's attention that a British couple had lost a huge sum of money in the process of completing a real estate transaction. The e-mails they exchanged with their attorney (or somesuch intermediary) had been intercepted by crooks, who replied with fake e-mails where they inserted their own bank account's details -- and whoop ! the money was gone.

Now if you only mail your grandmother to wish her well this might not concern you.

Another individual who's quite aware of the perils of using e-mail at all right now is Hillary Clinton. She used a private server in her bathroom to send state secrets by e-mail, and reliable intelligence experts say that of course, Russian and Chinese snoops, by now, have them "safely" stored on their own hard disks.

We lesser mortals don't handle state secrets (usually), but the above story shows that you don't need to in order to suffer considerable prejudice for neglecting to protect your privacy. Encrypted e-mail is possible, but unless you're a state organisation, it's highly complex and unwieldy.

Email is as safe as any other electronic communication system and when used appropriately is not a security issue - you would not send important information in the post without taking precautions against loss, the same applies to email. unfortunately a lot of individuals and governments do not have enough technological knowledge to ensure any real level of security

Kari, thanks for detailing your own experiences with W10. Can I ask please what the nature of your usage is, for example are you using the computer more as a glorified word processor as opposed say to a high-end gaming rig? I ask because it seems to me that the reason different users' "mileage may vary" is likely to be because the nature of their usage varies, so to get a feel for which users' experiences are more likely to be closer to one's own it's necessary to know where they're coming from.

Also, it seems to me that the real time to judge W10 will be after the free year is up and MS make it clear what their intended charging system is going to be. There's lots of speculation about licensing, paying for updates, paying for the box etc, and it's difficult to see in advance how well that will go down. For example, Kari, if your bank account was automatically debited under a licensing system every time Cortana gave you a reminder would you still be so keen to use it? I give that purely as an hypothetical example but I'm sure we can all agree that W10 isn't going to remain free to everyone for ever. One way or another MS will be getting us to pay.

My own view is that while MS can talk about having launched W10 last year it won't really be launched properly until they start charging for it, meanwhile they're trying every trick in the book to hook as many customers as they can during what is really only an extended beta. I see no particular reason to upgrade from W7 for the time being, and certainly wouldn't intend to do so until I know the future cost implications. It simply doesn't offer me any advantages at the present time, and the forced updating is a real turn-off for me. My usage is likely to be different to many, however, I use my two unconnected home computers for a combination of gaming and routine emails including reading of documents relating to my voluntary work, being retired from paid work. I don't do online banking, but of course there's also Mrs Seffrid's online shopping !

As I began by saying, it's a fascinating discussion and one that I'm sure will continue to evolve over the coming months!

Kind of looking a lot like W7/8 but with the advantages of the W10 architecture/hardware combo. I'd like this W10.

I think we are all to one degree or another in the (I don't really know for sure stage with W-10).
I have read a lot on the subject. I have also tried W-10 although not for quite a few months.
Most articles I read are slanted one way or the other. Microsoft doesn't help much with their released information. Of course Microsoft is going to paint a pretty picture of W-10 and I don't expect them to do otherwise. I try to read in between the lines when Microsoft post a statement. What are they not telling me is my mind thought. Paranoia on my part; maybe.
Beware of strangers bearing gifts is something else that comes to mind.
Microsoft main business is to make money as it should be. So what is the next little trick is Microsoft going to put forward? I don't really know. Something for sure because Microsoft spent a ton of money making W-10 and they will some how make money.
Because I'm a simple person all I want to know form Microsoft about W-10 is show me your goods and how much does it cost.

At the present time I'm in the (I don't really know for sure stage with W-10) and I have no problem waiting to see how things go.

I'm in no hurry. W-10 isn't going any place as far as I know. I can wait, watch and make a decision on W-10 for my use later.
Of course I like Windows 7 but that doesn't mean I'm not able to use something new if it suites me.

Now that I recall about the retail selling of Windows 10... could it be that, as I think, this free upgrade is an experiment to release a full version (retail)... that probably, prooooobably, will come without telemetry, and more options to control Windows Updates and such? I'm researching anonymous / encrypted e-mail right now, and my understanding of other people's studies is that there's just no simple way available to do it, especially if you need to exchange mail with any number of people you don't know. I'd be glad if anyone could point me to material showing otherwise...
