Ubuntu 11.04 Released

Sticking to its 6-month cycle, the Ubuntu team has today let loose its Natty Narwhal aka Ubuntu 11.04, the latest version of the (reasonably) popular open source Linux distribution. This release comes has the Unity interface replacing GNOME, as well as other goodies.

Among those goodies are the new, configurable launcher (found on the left-hand side of the screen), the fresh dash which brings together everything from documents and applications to music and video files, a workspace manager, full touchscreen support, an enhanced Software Center (now enables users to rate and review apps), an upgraded Ubuntu One cloud service, and, of course, updated software packages.

I wonder if it will finally have support for broadcom chips. Wifi has yet to work on any of my computers.
If they can fix that, I can finally run it on my laptop for coding as I can avoid the clutter of Windows...

Canonical have unveiled the beta 1 of the latest incarnation of its Linux operating system - Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal). Time to take it for a test spin.

Since this is a beta it is not intended for real usage, and neither is it fair to carry out a full review. So I’ll jsut go as far as to say that the installation was short and sweet. I particularly liked the way that I could enter details such as time zone info, keyboard choice, and user name/password while the install was going on in the background. It’s an interesting twist and a handy way to save time during the install.

Here’s a quick what’s new:

• Ubuntu 11.04 beta 1 features Linux kernel 2.6.38, Gnome 2.32, Compiz 0.9.4 and Xserver 1.10.
• New Unity interface.
• Firefox 4, Banshee 1.9.5 and LibreOffice 3.3.2 installed as default.
• Ubuntu Software Center features review and rating system for applications.
• Windows snapping by dragging windows to screen edges (a la Windows 7).
• Imporoved multi-touch support.
• New wallpapers.

Hope you have better luck with it then I had with the first. Couldn't even get it to install and boot up on an Intel or AMD system.

I'll wait until the Linux Mint version comes along. I find that even more idiot proof than Ubuntu (which it's based on)
I don't have the time or the energy right now to really try to learn Linux and Mint's aim seems to make everything happen through the GUI.
I reckon that Ubuntu and Mint are both striving for that stage.
There will always be command line enthusiasts but similar to; and better than, Windows, is the way to market share.

Although a long time Ubuntu user myself, I'm not real sure of this new push for the Unity desktop. I realize that I can go back to Gnome classic...but unless things improve radically with Unity, I think 11.04 is going to be a skip release and I'll wait for 11.10.

Yea it's a pain in the arse with it on my netbook. It's pretty temperamental whether WiFi will work. It works for a bit at first then just full on breaks.

Just remember the lack of broadcom support is more of a problem with broadcom rather than with Ubuntu or Linux. It's funny to me, that broadom NIC's are very common on servers and work great with Linux...but their wireless cards on the other hand....they don't seem to release drivers or information on....thus they don't in the Linux world.

Yea I know it's not a Linux problem. Just some proper drivers need to be released for it. I think it's a pretty big problem when a lot of netbooks come with them, yet there's problems with them on Linux.

Got it the second it appeared on Ubuntu site, now using it on my laptop as it can't support Windows 7 anymore. Been using Ubuntu since 9.10 Karmic, but still much prefer Windows 7 though.

I'd never used Unity it before, didn't really understand what it was exactly. The screen shots excited me. FINALLY something new in the UI department..

Untill I tried it

Very dissapointed, it has SO far to go to be anything near even the windows task bar let alone some add on task bars that blow the built in 7 one away in functionality.

Having EVERY single app placed into a single menu (system tools, applications, EVERYTHING) is also a no go.

You can tell that Unity was (as I learned) made for tablet or netbook use where you might have 5 apps and 2 system "control panels" and that's it. It is not ready for desktop use at all...

Yep. Would be OK for a Tablet, but shouldn't of been made default on desktop. Back to regular Gnome.

Well as Mr. Shuttleworth pointed out, Unity was made for touchscreen computers and with the rapid advancement in that department of technology, he predicts that every laptop sold in about the near future will be touchscreens.

But all you have to do (if you don't like Unity) is logout, select Ubuntu Classic and log back in.

Optionally after that you can do:

sudo apt-get remove unity

To remove Unity completely. I noticed switching to Gnome2 with Unity still installed made it lag a bit, but after removing Unity the G2 shell become faster in response times.

It was just sooooo dissapointing

It's way WAY past time for Linux to move forward with a modern UI. Gnome and KDE are mired in turn of the century desktop paradigms. :/

I know you probably knew already, was merely putting it up there for those that don't know.

And I have to agree somewhat, it's a really concept and a really good desktop environment, but it's not the time for it until the technology for it advances into the consumer world.

Good news though, Gnome 3 is being worked on at a good rate to get pushed to Ubuntu users. Fedora and Mint both have Gnome 3 now, but the devs are working to get it compatible with Ubuntu (from what I have read, Gnome 3 on Ubuntu still has some problems with applets/indicators missing/messed up).

Hmm, would like to see Unity in action, but my video drivers (on board/OEM) aren't up to par. Compiz appears to have problems as well (discovered this with KK)

I have no intentions of advancing my hardware for Linux support - That's the reason why I am running Linux on that machine - granted there are other distros that are designed for lesser systems, I still like Ubuntu and know that MM will be supported for a while.

anyone running Unity on minimal sys reqs with success? I'd like to see this new UI.
