Ubuntu 11.04 Released

Here is what I did with Unity on a virtual machine which doesn't have 3d support;

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:unity-2d-team/unity-2d-daily
sudo apt-get update

Last year I tired Ubuntu for a while.

It started to bring Unix nightmares from 30 years ago. No thanks on Linux. I will stay with MSFT Windows.:D

Did this surprise you? I'm always baffled when people try Linux and complain that it's like Unix.

As both a user of Linux and Windows...they both have a place for me. I am as comfortable on either one.

Just installed it in VirtualBox 4.06. Went in like a dream and the VirtualBox additions installed easily too. Like others I am not yet impressed with the Unity desktop, perhaps I need to play a bit.:D

Yep. Would be OK for a Tablet, but shouldn't of been made default on desktop. Back to regular Gnome.

When you're at the login screen, select your username (don't type password yet) and you can select the interface to use in one of the tabs at the bottom panel. Just select "Ubuntu Classic" for the old interface instead of Unity. This setting will stick when you restart etc unless you change it back to Unity.

Did it surprise me that it brought back Unix nightmares from two generations ago. Yes it did, but then we all have a lot of stuff buried in our unconscious from the past.

On the other hand I thought that Ubuntu would be a lot more user friendly which it wasn't, not by a long shot. I won't even get into the printer driver and networking problems with Ubuntu.

Linux is a basically an attempt to add a user friendly GUI to to an on out-dated computer stone age technology.

Yes there is a place for Linux among the computer geeks and young people who don't know better. There is evidenced by the insignificant Linux share of the home computing market.:D

Nope, I mean the toolbars turned the exact color of the classic windows theme, and it literally looks like Windows 98.

Most people do fresh installs if they plan to upgrade, as most of them get problems when doing a dist upgrade via update manager.

Ubuntu forums always gets a ton of those threads at each release when people do dist-upgrade over fresh install. "Blah blah nothing working right", "Broken stuffs", etc etc..

Installed it on laptop with no problems. Fought for about three hours to get it on desktop. Dual boot on both.

Don't like Unity so have gone back to Gnome on both machines.

I mainly use it if I have just a quick email to send (or similar) - much faster boot than Win7.

You can change the UI to the classic version as I said a few posts back.
