Ultimate Router Guide: Optimize Security & Performance

Here's what you should do with a router. If anyone else has other Info. then post it.

On my websites I see a lot of connections that get blocked trying to do malicious stuff. The IP addresses all come from legit ISPs, not host/cloud providers which leaves me to believe these IP addresses have infected routers. They were infected by hackers so that they can hide their dirty deeds.

Here's what you should do to mitigate this from happening to you:

1) Keep your router firmware updated. (Go to your router manufacture's website for the newest firmware)

2) Turn off remote administration

3) Change the default username and password

4) Don't use UPnP

5) If you don't need port forwarding then make sure it's off.

That's about it, absent of using a good third-party router firmware like ASUS Merlin for ASUS routers or DD-WRT. You'll need to read about how to install and use those at their respective website's and forums. It may be difficult for some to use and the risk of bricking your router is there. Routers with these two firmware's already installed can be had on eBay. As always, buyer beware.
