While some actually many prefer to perform their own customs tweaks with any OS they run the latest free tool providing system information as well as a lengthy list of items to customize appearance along with several other system functions is the latest Ultimate Windows Tweaker v1.2 now seen at Say “it’s my Windows” » Ultimate Windows Tweaker v1.2 Released

That opens right up to the main information screen with user name and some basics like cpu and memory with catagories found in links on the left column. The utility was written and just released earlier this week by an MS MVP.

Which RC do you have on there? So far I haven't been going through all of the tweaks and wouldn't advise trying several out all at the same time in order to avoid seeing problems. This is one of those tools intended for the advanced user who can recover from any bad tweak. That's one word of caution I should add in here.

RC1... the only RC so far? Released may 10th or somthing?

And the tool should work, some of those tweaks should be safe...
yet it crashes and/or errors every time i tried to apply changes.

Nothing changed so i deleted it.

You may have simply seen a bad install. That can happen easy enough at times. Remember all this stuff is being tried out on in mostly beta form at present.

For sure :) Would be nice to see them deny access to the W7 Beta equivelant, or at least archive it once it's been substantiated that it doesn't work on the RC.

Surprisingly this wasn't simply any 3rd party tool where ending up seeing problems is typical in many cases. This one was written by someone at MS and listed there. It's kind of like having something bug free(malware, trojan free) but still seeing develpmental type glitched needing correction.

I tend to go through tons of downloads for various tools and often end up dumping them for not being worth the time. This was being given a look here for seeing a clean gui and being placed in versatile catagory for addons due to what it offers.

The one thing to remember about this is that it's still an addon to try out with some degree of patience. If you can't get it to work or see too many problems using it then the obvious solution is simply to dump it. The next person to come may have it singing in the choir at the same time.

The advanced user will most likely pass this right by to begin with for their own custom tweaks rather then relying on any addon. I still have to look this over a bit more before I can give you any personal assessment on it. If any bugs are noticed there'll be some feedback going in on it.

Thank you Night Hawk. I am going to check this out in a little.

Edit: Just downloaded and wow, there are lots and lots of useful options in this. It's nice to have all in one convenient place. If it works, which I haven't tested yet, then it's definitely a keeper.

This thing is not to be trusted. I've tested all the tweakers currently available and this one is the least stable of the lot. By far, Windows Manager is the most stable and effective, followed closely by the new release of Tweak 7, released May 15.

This thing is not to be trusted. I've tested all the tweakers currently available and this one is the least stable of the lot. By far, Windows Manager is the most stable and effective, followed closely by the new release of Tweak 7, released May 15.

I'm not making any comparisons to start with but simply letting people know this is available and yes it is still in it's own beta stage. None of these are things to rush into and go hog wild over since you can easily run into problems when checking everything off all at once.

Presently 7 is still not final to start with in itself. You still have to take one step at a time to see how things go. Try a few of those 7 toolbars that were fast to appear for XP and Vista that never seem to work well either! As I was mentioning before these can be a little easier for the novice while the advanced user wil generally tend to perform their own custom tweaks.

And no omnium I'm not worried that you were trying to hijack anything here by the way. :D If anything you simply provided an alternative for anyone that sees problems with the Ultimate tool there.

its a continual ''work in progress''....
Yes i agree it's too recent a RC release to make a comparison =/
The person responsible for the Ultimate tool has probably been flat out getting ready for RC1 and has simply taken a break.

I know i would do :)

It's only been 2 weeks since RC1 was released for public download, i don't think it's fair to start comparing a peice of software to another, when one of those software peices hasn't even been updated since the release of RC1.

Either way i intend to give Ultimate tweaker another chance once it is updated.... atm i've done some of my own tweaks but they are rather performance and auditing orientated.

I expect ultimate tweaker to have alot of visual and interaction tweaks which i have not seen listed anywhere else yet. That's probably more due me slacking off and not looking, but hey :devil2:
I've been getting distracted by Call of duty; world at war too much lately

Windows XP isn't limited to 3.8gb odd of ram because it's 32-bit.
It's limited to under 4gb of ram because microsoft are lazy.

Windows xp doesn't have a large enuogh stack handling assembly (Memory management system) to go past 4gb of ram and M$ were too lazy to write one, when it's only a tiny bit more effort to fix the memory hogging behaviours of vista and release it as Windows 7.

So they did the latter.

so .....it is in fact possible to use 4gb+ in vista x86 with S/W intervention, & not be limited to a 4096mb address space..??, i diddnt think that could be changed....

4096mb address space..??,
You put the answer in your own post.
4096mb address space is what XP holds at highest.
All M$ did was increase the amount of addresses available e.g the maximum address space to something like 64,192
Then since they were already re-designing memory management they;
Implemented 64bit management
Implemented 64bit Dual channel support

Redesigned the core so instead of emulating 64bit ram management in a shell, True 64bit hardware interaction with the RAM was available (And thus spawned DDR3 RAM capability for motherboards)

That also allowed other apps to use the RAM, since W7 didn't have to take up all your ram and then emulate 64 bit capability and hand it out to your other applications.

It's also the reason why only W7 tweaks allow you to run 4gb+ ram in the 32bit version. Vista doesn't support true 64bit ram interaction or processing, which is why it still has too many problems. It's been emulated the entire time inside the Vista core memory footprint.

Love it... why? Vista takes advantage of a 36bit interaction tweak and hardware hack. It's not true 64-bit hardware interaction, even for the x64 releases.

I'm not too sure on the details, but from the looks of things W7 x86 simply uses the 64bit memory management system as a base and can still use 64bit ram addressing once the tweak is applied, since every current processor is 64bit capable.
