Solved Unable to associate file type to upgraded version of a program

I downloaded an upgrade to DxO Pro Optics. The old one, v6, was buggy so I upgraded to v7.1, which is in the v7 folder.

I can't associate my raw Canon files to DxO v7.1, probably because in regedit it says:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\DxOOpticsPro.exe\shell\open\command it reads, under Data: "C\Program FIles(x86)\DxO Optics Pro v6\DxOOpticsPro.exe" ""1" [the extra quotation mark should be a percentage symbol (ie before the numeral one]

I thought I could change the v6 to v7 but I'm not allowed to.

I just open and close these things because I only know enough to ruin my computer.

Please help?

Does the DxO v7.1 version have a separate folder of it's own in Program Files (x86) or Program Files instead of in the original DxO Optics Pro v6 folder? If so, you could use Open With to select the .exe file for the DxO v7.1 version to associate to the file type.

Are you able to install the DxO v7.1 version separately instead of upgrading from the older version? If so, you could uninstall them, then install the new version to be able to.

Yes, Shawn, it does have a separate forlder in PFx86 and I have tried the Open With command to select the exe file, as you suggested. Nada. That's what's so puzzling.

I did install the 7.1 version separately. Both were on my system until I uninstalled v 6, thinking that would solve the problem. It didn't so I did a system restore before deletion and not only does the problem persist, I can't open the 6.6 version either though the raw files (that I want to change association to 7.1) are associated with that program.

The loss of the v6 doesn't bother me. It was awful buggy.

If you have not already, uninstall both of them completely, then install the new version to see how that works.

I have just uninstalled completely (both) and am about to reinstall.

And yes, I am able to open files within the program itself.

Odd though... I checked the registry and that annoying command is still there for DxO 6.6 which is supposed to have been removed from the machine.

Here is a screenshot of my registry entry... see? It points to a program no longer on my machine. I don't know how to create the new command and then delete the old one, which seems the common sense thing to do.

That should be left as is since it's the way the program installed it as.

What file extension (ex: .jpg, .bmp, etc...) are you trying to have open with this program? That is what you should be using Open with or Default Programs on instead to change to open using the .exe file of the new version of the program.

I wouldn't change anything I don't understand, Sean. No worries there.

But I have tried repeatedly both methods you suggest with no result. The program is simply not recognized by either "Open with" or "Default Programs."

Puzzled as to why not... this is after a complete uninstall and reinstall, cold restart.

See if Types can do it for you. I've only used it once & it worked the charm. You can even uninstall Types & you have the option to leave the changes.

It is a little confusing but you should be able to figure it out. You can install it to the control panel & the context menu or either.

Thanks but the last time I installed new software from a chat room my computer OS completely went kaput. I can't face that again - not for a minor problem.

I can vouch that the free program Types would be good one to try to get the file to open with DxO v7.1.

Tried Types and they couldn't find DxO at all in list of programs under the .cr2 file extension.... ???

I would recommend to also contact DxO and report this issue to them to see if it may be a known issue with that program and if they may have a solution or workaround.

What do you think that item in the registry means?

It's a registry entry added when you installed the program for reference of it's exe file used to run the program. However, it could also be a orphaned remnant from the older version of the program you had installed as well.

If you like, you could try modifying the path part of the entry to that of the exe file for the version instead to see if that may help.

That's what I was thinking but to do it I'd have to make a new one, right? and then delete the old one? I didn't see a way to just change the wording to v7 instead of v 6. If so, which option under "new" do I use?

If you could post back with the full path of the .exe file for the new version of the program, I'll be happy to create a REG file that you could use to change this registry entry automatically for you.
