Unable to download updates automatically/manually, download hangs

I'm trying to download updates through Windows Update, it shows that I have 139 important updates, and 40 optional ones. I selected them and clicked the install button but it got stuck at "Downloading updates (0 kb total, 0% complete)". I cancelled and retried choosing only 24 important updates and the same happened. I tried the check for updates option but it also keeps checking forever.
I also tried downloading updates from Microsoft Download Center but when I try to install them it hangs on "searching for updates on this computer".
I already ran the Microsoft Fix It tool, disabled my anti-virus and firewall, but nothing works.
I cannot install the SURT because it also keeps searching for updates.

I need to update so I can upgrade to Windows 10 - the setup also got stuck while checking for updates, so I was hoping that updating beforehand would do the trick.

Any suggestions on how to fix this problem are appreciated.

Hi agentrozanova & welcome to the forum. :)
Download SFCFixexe.zip open it to desktop and run. Save SFCFix.log to post with other logs.
Please follow Windows Update Posting Instructions
Please be patient and allow programs to complete. SURT, SFCfix.exe can take a long time (hours) to complete. Windows updates the past few months are excruciatingly slow (24-48 hours reported)

How long did you let SURT run? Patience is a virtue!! Depending on the issues, it may take quite some time to complete.
Additionally, windows updates are sometimes taking as much as 24-48 hours to complete. How long did you let that run? Please try SURT again and let it run (hour or longer) hopefully it will complete and you can post log located at C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder.
Last few months, when I do updates, I set my power options to never in (high performance option) choose that option and get some sleep. :)

I didn't run SURT because I couldn't install it. When I tried it just hung on "Searching for updates on this computer", the same that happens when I try to manually install updates. However, now I retried downloading it and installing it, and the installation started, but it still froze at "Installing Hotfix for Windows (KB947981) (update 1 of 1)", very close to the end.
Then I retried and I got an error: "Installer encountered an error: 0x80240009"
And yet again I retried, and I'm now getting another error: "Some updates were not installed"

What operating system did your laptop come with?

Their should be a Windows 7 COA key sticker on the bottom or in the battery compartment that looks something like this.

Again, I'm asking, HOW LONG DID YOU LET SURT RUN? HOW LONG DID YOU LET WIN UPDATE RUN?

5 min, 10, min, 1/2 hr, hr, over night?
