Unable to install internet explorer 9 upwards

Hi there,

i am having problems installing all updates on my newly inherited machine. In order to install a newer version of interenet explorer (currently ie8) it says I must install SP1 but when I do this the update fails. When I go to windows update it says I must restart my machine in order to install updates but when I do this it doesn't register that I have restarted. I have gone through all troubleshooting tips that microsoft suggest but still all updates are unsuccessful.

Help please.

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data
If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)
