Unable to partition my c drive

When I hit shrink query runs but comes back that there no room to create a patition. I have a 500 gig hard drive and in properties it shows 350 gigs available. I have searched the forums but seem to be the only one with this problem.I have a second 500 gig hard drive for storage and this one I can partition just fine. But the hard drive contianing my operating system Vista Ultimate 64 the shrink option is gray out. Any help would be appreciated.

i had a similar problem when i used a boot utility to resize my 320gb hdd, it rendered 30gb unpartitionable and i had to delete all partitions on the HDD to recover the 30gb.

Hi Kellymac,

GParted should be able to do that for you.

Here is a tutuorial - you shouldn't need to do the startup repair mentioned as installing Win 7 afterwards obviates the need for that.

Here's the direct d/l for a tiny free isoburner - works great , just runs straight away - I use to burn iso to cd all the time

For anyone not familiar with burning bootable .iso files, don't format the cd, if Autoplay pops up, just close it

Also try Defraging it. Sometimes the drive needs it and in built partitioning tools won't be able to defrag it automatically so it tells you there isn't adequite room. I use Acronis Disk Director and it's bloody great..
