Hi guys,

I wasn't quite sure where to post this so I'll put it here :)

My mother bought a cooking ebook, in PDF format and in 7 parts. They came with a password to view which is understandable, but printing is restricted.

My mum doesn't really think taking her laptop in the kitchen is a very practical method of reading it, and so naturally she asked me to try and find a way around this restriction.

I'm clueless, so any help would be appreciated. As I said I have the password to actually open the PDF and it was all legitimately acquired so I don't see the problem in asking a question of this nature.

Thanks in advance.

Err....Skype, there are several ways around that problem but the ethical thing in this would be to contact the book vendor and ask for help. There must be a specific reason why printing is restricted on those books.

Bring the PDF up on the screen, highlight what you want to print. Then press CTL+P and check "Selection" and Print. You can also try to Print "All" without highlight.

Depending of which print screen comes up, you may also be able to select a page range.

Well, he paid for the cookbook - and using it on the kichen electronically is not really that handy. I can understand his problem.

But your suggestion to contact the author is probably the best. Who knows whether our schemes work.

With all due respect Bill the situation is genuine, I'm not trying to disguise it :P The cookbook was quite expensive and the author is all the way in Canada (I'm in UK), and ordering a paperback copy of the book would have cost my mother more than the books cost in p&p.

And @ the people suggesting selecting the text and printing it, the print feature within adobe pdf viewer is completely greyed out.

i would ignore the print feature in the pdf reader. open a blank word page, highlight the txt in the pdf, right click it ,copy, then paste into the word doc. then in the word doc go to print and bob ought to be your uncle!

It wont let me copy the text from the PDF :(

@WHS: that program looked very promising, but it cannot handle password encrypted files. If it had an option to enter the password and then convert it to .doc that would be brilliant but alas it does not :(

I tried to remove the encryption but it asked for an owner password, which sadly is not the same as the password I have to view the PDF.

Only an electronic licence was purchased so the pdf is probably locked down 6 ways from Sunday. They most likely have more options, to buy, of course, to allow printing it. Like an E-book, you can read it in a reader but that's all.
That said, you can take a snip or screen shot of the recipe Mom wants and save it in Paint and print it as a picture. Lower quality, but would work.

that got me thinking britton ,another way would be after snipping the recipe if you have microsoft office then open onenote insert the snip into a new page then right click the snip and select copy txt from pic then paste it into a new word document .this would keep the quality, although a complete PITA.

Thanks boohbah, the only office I know is Word, Excel, and Power point (to read presentations, not make them). I'm not familiar with One Note. Sounds like a better way to keep print quality though.

Screenshots

As suggested by Britton30, screenshot the page and print the result.

I use that method to get copies of my course test results.
I hate taking tests and not finding out where I went wrong.

Screenshots are useful for all sorts of things.
A lot of Windows info screens don't have the option to create a txt file listing of them (e.g. Programs and Features, NIC adapter settings, etc.).
I just take screenshots of them.

If I successfully use some complex Command Prompt instruction, I screenshot the result, so that when I need to do it again (in a few months time) I don't have to" reinvent the wheel".

I guess you have to do what Bill2 said - contact the author. Else you could copy the file to a tablet (e.g. iPad or Xoom). That might be handier in the kitchen.
