first off, sorry about my bad english, i am from holland (where education needs inprovement if you ask me)

anyway, i resently had my laptop reinstald from vista to windows 7 (my C was full and i had nothing instald on it, its just up-dates, so it was needed)

the problem now is, before if some games dont work as the sims 3, i just opend the system en opend the advanged to add the sims in a list that DEP allows it and problem solved.

but for some reason i cannot do that now, the text below command about needing to be admin (wich as only user on the lap i am), and run the BCSEDIT.exe.
i run it (even as admin) but it the problem keeps going on.
i noticed some ways to turn the DEP off on this site, but that seems a bit extreem (as that people most of the time warn that its not the best option)
i just want to get the old system of having it on but beeing able to allow games by adding it to the approved list.

somebody knows how?
if needed: windows 7 ultimate X64

I've never heard of anything like this even being necessary...

Did you enable DEP "for essential Windows programs and services only"? IMHO, that's the only setting you need.

Let me see if I understand this right. Both radio buttons (DEP for Windows only/DEP for everything) are unchecked, and you can't check either one? That's pretty weird.

Even if your CPU doesn't support the no-execute bit, Windows should still offer software-based DEP for its own processes.

At the bottom of the window, does it say "Your CPU supports hardware-based DEP"?

This is starting to make less and less sense. Where does it tell you to run bcdedit and why? And what's this got to do with DEP?

I'm sorry but I'm lost here. Never heard of this in connection with the DEP settings before. Could you take a screenshot and upload it here?

Ahhhhhh....of course, now I get it.

DEP requires a setting named PAE to be enabled, which means Physical Address Extension. Windows should automatically enable PAE during installation if your CPU supports hardware-based DEP and/or you have more than 4GB of RAM.
For some reason PAE must be disabled on your system. And the PAE setting is stored in the BCD...that's why Windows displays the message about bcdedit.

To enable PAE, open a command prompt with administrative privileges and type the following:
bcdedit /set pae ForceEnable
Then simply reboot your computer and try the DEP setting again.

(I still think you only need to enable DEP for Windows services etc., not for all programs on your computer. That way you don't have to add any exclusions to the list - but of course you can, if you prefer.)

Let me know if this works for you. :)

i copy'd it opend the cmd.exe pasted it, and restarted my lap, but sadly it did not help

i do need to use the dep, i have a few games (such as sims midieval) that keeps getting block'd, shut down and so on because of the dep, even one that will not even start to begin with.

my girlfriend had the same problems and by adding them to the Dep list they started working without problems, so here is my dilema...

any idea what i did wrong?/ why it did not work?

Did you make sure to open the command prompt with admin privileges? You should have a shortcut to it in your Start menu; rightclick it and select Run as administrator.

The bcdedit command should also return with a message saying it was successful. Try again - does it?

Had same problem as OP with DEP buttons shaded out and same error messages (admin privileges required and to use bcedit.exe). Fixed it with EasyBCD. On advanced settings tab, I set PAE to default and NoExecute set to OptIn. What this does is apply DEP to windows core (not applications) but also brings back the DEP buttons options for applications protection too. The problematic program that wouldnt run now works.
