Did you burn the CD on the same machine you are trying to read it on?
You might try a different brand of CD-R too. Have you waited to see if the picture viewer will respond, it takes longer to read a CD than from your HDD. Be certain you have a new blank CD-R too.

Yes, I burned it in the same machine and immediately viewed it. I burned 3 identical CDs, but I can only view the first one.

The brand of my CD is Imation CD-R, 700MB. They came straight out of the pack before burning.

I've waited for 10 minutes and it has never responded. Eventually, I aborted the operation with Task manager.

What program are you using to burn the discs? Do not use a "packet writing" program, use a regular "data" CD burning program, such as what comes with Nero, Roxio, the free Imgburn, etc. Packet Writing programs such as Roxio's Drag to Disc, Nero InCd, etc tend to be flakey.

I don't know how to describe it, but it is within the Microsoft Windows 7 package.

All I did was copy the files that I am going to burn, and click the 'Burn to disk' button, that's all.

That way should work fine. Try it this way, put in a blank CD-R, close the dialog which comes up. Got to the folder with your pics in and select all, right click on one and Send to the drive with the blank disk.

Imation disks should be fine. Is the disk readable in another PC?

@bbearen: Just the original Windows file burner; I don't use any other software.
That might be the problem. Start using software. There are plenty of quality free ones to choose from. I prefer CDBurnerXP.

It seems like the built-in burner, even going back to XP, had quality issues. Given the lack of features and faith people have in it, there's really no reason to use it.

Your CD-Rs should be fine, but you might want to check out these Best Buy offers if you live in the USA. It's better to pay a little more for good quality discs - your photos are precious so it pays to be careful what you use.

CD-R & CD-RW: Blank CDs - Best Buy

You might also want to check to see if your CD/DVD-ROM drive came with a software disc that will have some sort of burning software such as Roxio or Nero and try that if Windows 7's burner is proving to be problematic.

I also recommend CDBurnerXP among others.
