Undo move deleted files!?

Earlier I had cut and paste photos from an SD card to a folder in an external hard drive. Much later I had accidentally clicked undo move thinking it was referring to something else and hit cancel (the SD card was no longer inserted at the time). To my shock, without any prompt or warning, windows deleted the files from the folder. Why an "undo move" operation would even be attempted when the original location is unavailable is beyond my but now I have no idea what to do. Rescuva at least displayed the file names and some were "overwritten." How? I have no idea. A second scan a few minutes later won't even display the names anymore. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Clutching at straws here but have you looked in your recycle bin to see if the folder or files are there? When you want to move files from a card to a drive in the future use the COPY and paste command then when the files are safely on your chosen hard drive and backed up then you can delete them from the card. If the card is from a camera then use the cameras software to delete files from the card, do not delete them whilst the card in in your card reader on the PC! Your camera's documentation will recommend this! The fact that some of your files were overwritten would indicate that after you hit the wrong button you saved further files to that same folder. When you delete a file , it is not actually deleted it is just hidden but the space it takes up is made available so if you save another file then it could use that available space. Then it becomes very difficult to recover the original file. That's where commercial retrieval companies come in
