Unexpected BSOD

Hello,

I have a problem with my laptop. I have a Sony VAIO VGN-FW290J with 4GB RAM memory, running Microsoft Windows 7 Professional x64 and I have received about 4 BSOD in few days. From what I have noticed, I have to mention that all these occurred when I was running uTorrent (having about 13-15 active torrents - about 75GB total). I am not sure this is the reason, but I found this to be the common point of all crashes. The BSODs raised up not in a petitioner moment of the laptop. The max download speed I can reach is about 3MB/s. I also must say that 2 of the crashes happened in full download speed (just mentioned). I updated the driver of my WiFi card (Intel 5100AGN) and I have received a new BSOD even with the latest driver.
I have played few games on it, the newest one being the new Call of Duty 6 - Modern Warfare 2 and there was no problem.

I'd be glade if anybody will answer and help me solve this problem, since it is very annoying for me.

I took a look at the dmp and found a couple of things. First several old drivers dating back to 2006. they need to be updated.

the crash was probably caused by netw5v64.sys That is part of your wifi driver and that oc course needs to be updated.

Update the drivers

run a system file check to verify and repair system files( may need to be run more that once) to run type cmd in search>right click and run as admin

sfc /scannow

I did as you said:

First, I ran "sfc /scannow" and the output was: "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violation." thus being no problem here.
Then I ran a memcheck with my Kubuntu 8.10 CD booting from the CD. I did not wait to finish since I was out of time. At 67% the screen looked as in the attached file below. Is it necessary to finish the tests?

I don't know what to say about drivers, since I have the most recent one of my WiFi card. I also have noticed that there are some old one (in device manager) since 2006, but those drivers are Windows's one, I didn't install them, so they came with Windows 7. I used the "update driver" section, but it said the it was up to date.

I am not sure how to interpret the results from the memtest, but there seems to be some errors. What can you tell me about that? Are they fatal one? Or, will I be able to use my laptop with those DIMMs (there are 2x2GB). Will the problems become more numerous by the time?

If you make an error in your checkbook of 1¢ - it's not a real big problem.
If you make an error in your checkbook of $1,000,000.00 - it is a big problem.
Both involve only 1 character - but the location of that 1 character is critical.

It's my opinion that the same thing holds true for memory errors.
That being said, I notice that you're only on the 7th test of the first pass and the system has already counted 288 errors.

I usually recommend letting the test run for at least 3 passes (but overnight is better). But in this case things just aren't going to get any better for you - so it's time to stop the test.

This could be a stable error (which you may be able to put up with), or it may be a degrading condition where the errors get worse over time.

You can try testing the sticks individually. Start with Step 7 of this link: Memory Diagnostics If one of the sticks is OK, then you can run with just that until you get the money for another stick.

Hi there,

I did a memcheck test for both the DIMM. It seems that only one of them rises up errors. For that with errors I didn't wait to finish, but for the good one I waited for the test to finish and there was no error. So, one of the two sticks has some errors.
Could this (surely) be the cause for the problem I've posted here in the first post (the BSOD generation cause)? Or maybe there could be another problem with the WiFi (the card or the driver)?

So leave the stick with errors out and continue to run the system and see if you get more errors.
If not, then it's fixed. If you do get errors, post back and we'll work on them.

Hi,

I use the system for 2 days with no uTorrent and there was no error. So, even with the bad DIMM into the laptop, there was no error. Probably, the error raise up only in this condition (bad memory + torrents download). For me, it's not a very big deal. I can survive like that.

I was looking for an identical memory DIMM like the two I have in my laptop and I was not able to find one in my country. Is it absolute necessary that both the sticks to be identical? I don't know if my laptop (motherboard) supports dual-channel, since I don't know what motherboard do I have. And how can I know if my motherboard supports 8GB RAM memory? What do you think?

It says it does support dual-channel memory - so I'd suggest getting a part that's as close to the original as possible (DDR2 PC2-6400 for example). The system doesn't have to use dual-channel - but it does help to speed things up.

What is the difference between single-channel and dual-channel? I mean, how much will I see the difference if dual-channel won't work? Can you give a percentage?

Nope, I can't - I've never done any research on it.
I do switch RAM for customers at work, but can't tell if there's a significant difference because I've never seen their systems before.
I do use different brands at work, and if it doesn't work I just switch to a different brand.

I'd suggest searching Google for the differences between single channel and dual channel - someone's got to have done a comparison.

My guess is that there might be a significant difference. The reason is because my motherboard is only single channel DDR and I have dual channel (which operates only in single because of motherboard) OCZ Gold DDR, overclocked. See specs.

The highest I can get for winsat mem is 3000 MB/sec. Notice my timings, too.

One new question? Since my processor's FSB (T9600) is 1066MHz, can I use DDR3-1066 MHz memory? I know it does like exactly like DDR2, but I am not sure that it'll work.

No. It is extremely rare that motherboards can accept both standards. There's maybe one or two of them. If you have DDR2 now, you're pretty much guaranteed to only be able to use DDR2.
