Hi guys,

few months back i had power-off issues not long after i'd just built my machine, i'd get warnings that the ASUS surge protector thing had powered off to prevent damage. it turned out to be a red herring, i ran sfc and fixed errors and all was fine.

recently, i have had the machine on about 10~15 mins and it's switched off, no warnings, rebooted to the usual "unexpected" screen w/ the option to go to safe mode etc, and none of the previous ASUS messages etc.

i've had it on a few times w/ no issues, and tonight it happened again after 10 mins or so, no exertion on the CPU or GPU so that doesn't seem an issue ~ i do 3D stuff in Blender, so having done renders etc and put more straing on things w/out issues, i think that's a reasonable assumption?

just ran SFC, no probs.

i've gone through the events, and there's no failure type things i can see, the only Kernel one is the restart saying the previous power down was unexpected.
there are a couple i have no idea about, maybe some guru here can shed light as to if they're related:

"10114
The UMDF reflector was unable to complete startup because the WUDFPf service was not found. This service may be started later during boot, at which point Windows will attempt to start the device again."

"7040

however, there is also events saying
"Installation Ready: The following updates are downloaded and ready for installation. This computer is currently scheduled to install these updates on ‎23 ‎February ‎2017 at 03:00:
- Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB915597 (Definition 1.235.3277.0)"
"Installation Successful: Windows successfully installed the following update: Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB915597 (Definition 1.235.3277.0)"
and i have heard rumours that sometimes the Update thing can go silly and initiate power-offs - is this the culprit?

TIA

just got two more in a row, again there's nothing that jumps out at me. i have auto restart turned off so it's not a BSOD issue as far as i can tell, only error events are

does this mean anything to anyone?
i saw one thread saying the APID and CLSID could be safely deleted from registry but it didn't mention where the entries were!

Hi Wolfie,
Those are pretty standard across many comps.

its not an updates/activations problem, those errors DO NOT cause a shutdown .

Can you check if you have any more dmp files, if so please follow the BSOD instructions i posted earlier.
Could be a temps issue?

Roy

thanks for the reply bud.

done a search for *.dmp, nothing recent coming up.
ran the win memory checker thing, it found nothing.
pretty sure it's not temps. room ambient is nothing special, and the shutdown was w/in minutes of startup[always is] and after the restart and stuff it always seems ok - i've done pretty heavy rendering/gaming and the like that has the card/CPU working pretty good and there hasn't been any issues there, so i'm a bit puzzled [doesn't take much! total puter noob, this machine was my first build back in 2015.]

This might be related to a problem I had with two earlier laptops. I can't tell by system specs what hardware you have. Desktop? Laptop? Manufacturer and model name & number?

Hey Wolfie,

I was wondering if you;ve managed to fix your issue. I'm having very, very similar issues as you describe (albeit in Win 10 pro).
I've built my rig a few months ago and have had the same random shutdowns as well. I can game heavily for hours with no problem, and sometime it works fine for days. Sometimes it just randomly shuts down while browsing or file managing or even during idle.

No BSOD, no warning, just instant power down and no clues in the logfiles. I've since changed my PSU, fixed a driver issue with my processor, but still no luck. I hardly have anything to go on.

Hoping to shed some light on it, it's driving me crazy

hi,
i'm beginning to think it's a prob w/ my house supply. when i first had issues like this, i was getting shut-offs and messages saying the ASUS Surge protector had tripped to save my puter - googling suggested nothing ever useful came of that feature so, as suggested, i disabled it and then found an issue when i ran SFC, which said i had some corruptions. i did an OTT and fixed stuff and all has been ok till this power-off thing. after the posts above and other googling, i was thinking perhaps the issue is external to the machine so i've tried swapping the socket it was plugged into in my extension block. so far, i've had no issues since the post above, so hopefully....

Thanks for the reply. Worth a try for me as well. I replaced the power chord and used another socket now. Let's see what happens.
