Uninstalling Norton Online Backup

Hello,

I'm not sure if this is where I'm supposed to post, so correct me if I'm wrong. Also, I'm a new Windows 7 user, so I may need things dumbed down.

I already had an anti-virus program that I use when I first started Windows 7, so I choose not to install Norton nor have I ever installed Norton on my computer. Before installing my new program, I uninstalled Norton, Control Panel + Programs + Uninstall and it disappeared. I also choose to uninstall the Norton Online Backup. At the time, I wanted to uninstall it not for any real reason, just wanted to get rid of anything Norton on my computer to avoid future confusion, not because I thought it actually did anything. But even though I've tried and tried, and according to the window that pops up and tells you you were successful, Norton Online Backup is still there.

Now I don't know what that program does, or if it's fine to let it hang out on my computer or anything, but the fact that I can't get rid of it is driving me crazy. Every once in a while, few days or so, a screen pops up, asking me if I want to try a free trial of Norton. There's a "remind me later" button, but no "no, never ask me again" or opt out button. I'm not sure why Windows keeps asking me that, or if it's the Norton Online Backup doing it's thing, but I have an anti-virus program, and I don't want Norton!

I've also downloaded a Norton removal tool, ran it, a window said I was successful, and I restarted, but Norton Online Backup is still here. Staring at me in the face. On principle alone, I need it gone.

Can anyone help me get rid of it please?

Thanks!

Hi Athene!

I followed the link you provided (thanks!) and it looks like all I have to do is have a little patience, and wait and see. It looks like the Norton Online Backup is an automatic installation reminder, which after the 3rd time of it popping up I can choose the "no, never ask again" option. Now that I think about it, the reminder's only popped up twice, so fingers crossed, the next time will be the final time.

I installed F-Secure Anti-virus, because my University provides it for free, and yes, that's exactly the Norton Removal Tool that I used.

So I just gonna hang out, and see what happens these next few days, and hopefully breakup with Norton for good. Not that I have anything against Norton, just that I don't want random thingys floating around my computer for no reason.

Thanks again!

m.
