I don't think I have ever seen a file like this before. The name of the file is:

tmpgcju2_hZnfPPjgk5QyYdF27.Hbh-OeBuavZeAsGsnf1e6G6FAP0GYKRfRtaLxCndCJdyxoQ8.oHfSKfMsZ_DmOLRM7QFA45RFgf31PxEVhwYie_dqBj0XYqm3ssR_zGeSJ2I11gHLxiarYTX-RrkybOZsB2s.fu7dz2zD3G419gFbyZlgNLlE0wE4667fEqtznlUzij_RJl3sUQ70iFmxycKPFclXlf1tjd.ewXlf1ptkaiQcn2fg9pEbaI

I scanned it with Avast, and while it didn't indicate a threat I still find this odd.

The creation date is July 20, just a few minutes past midnight. A few weeks ago I did a factory reset on my machine, but I think that was several days prior to the 20th, and it certainly wasn't something I ran overnight. However, I did also (temporarily) install Visual Basic, which ran overnight. That's the only thing I can think of that might have legitimately created new files overnight.

Anyone have an idea what this file might be and whether it's something I can safely delete without harming my operating system?

Have you tried making a hash (md5, sha1, or sha256) of it and checking the hash on a site like VirusTotal?

What attributes does the file have?
I would try to delete it. It's probably a temporary file as it doesn't have an extension.
